DCT D/S mode change after using the paddles?

Took delivery last Friday. What a car.

Have a quick question regarding to the DCT, I tried looking this up on the owner's manual but couldn't find any information.

I was cruising on the freeway. The car was in D mode and I pulled the paddle to up shift once on the freeway. A mile or two later, I pulled out to the exit, stopped for two minutes to wait for the stop light to turn.

For that amount of time, I expected the DCT would have changed from S (since I pulled the paddle) to D again much like the PDK I had in my Cayman before.

To my surprise, it stayed at S mode (car automatically downshift according to speed even though in S). I found that out when I start accelerating again after the light turned green and it was making a loud noise after hitting 6k rpm (so long for not exceeding 5k rpm during break in...).

So my question is, will the DCT change back to D mode after initiating the S mode through paddle?

Each time you pull the paddle regardless on the driving mode you are (comfort, sport or sport +) you have to put the transmission in D again if you want the car to shift by itself.

Great, thanks for confirming that. Car is in the shop getting XPEL, so really appreciated it.

This caught me out at first also, my 135i would revert back to D if you didn't use the paddles again for about 30 secs or so.

I see. So this only applies to their M-DCT, not their automatic then cause I do remember it going back to D after a while the last time I test drove a M235i months ago...

My N55 135i was also DCT, i think it's just M car specific.

So, does this mean that one can knock the shifter to the right again to put the car back in D? I assume one could do it while the driving, yes?

The manual offers few comments that I can find on this.

Yes that's right, caught me out first few times too. Mainly I think because the gearbox still changes back into 1 as you come to a stop so you think its back in auto mode but its not.

I got caught out by this during the test drive as well, and hit the rev limiter a few times!
You have to manually move the lever across again to put it in D.
Coming from PDK I also thought it'd automatically just revert back but it doesn't.

Just something I will get used to, and then it becomes second nature.

Will be taking delivery next month. This thread touches upon something I've been wondering. I had an E60 M5 with SMG and when starting up, I'd shift into D and the transmission would stay there until I shifted. As you guys are discussing, I'd have to shift into D again to go to full auto mode. Is that basically the same with the M2 DCT? I thought there might be an option to go directly into S mode at startup.

Have to either bump the gear lever to the right again, or push it up or down, or pull one of the paddles to activate manual changes. If you want to go back to auto, bump the lever to the right again. Super quick and straightforward.
