14.3mpg with 328i xdrive; is this normal?

Hi I want to know if my mpg is considered normal or is my gas just evaporating? I only have 400 miles on my car and I noticed that I am only doing 14.3mpg on my car. My car is always on comfort mode. I probably drove 300 miles highway and the rest are streets. Now I always have the AC running but according to websites that should be a 25% drop in fuel economy, not 50%.

edit: As for my driving habit, I have never slammed the gas pedal, usually around 25 city and 60 highway.

It's hard to say without knowing how you drive. You could be in ECO PRO 100% of the time but nail the car in the beans at every stop light and get crap mileage...

That being said, if you drive like a normal person, then that is very low. I get about 24-25 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. In a hotter climate driving in only city with lots of stop and go, that will drastically lower the mpg though.

I am getting 23 mpg on my 328xdrive. Doesnt seem to get any higher than that. All these car companies are guilty of average mpg embellishment.

I get 21, but it's almost all local driving, with the speed averaging only 30 MPH. On the highway cruising at 70-75 I get around 30.

Just reset the trip computer and try again. If the car is brand new it has been loaded on a ship and moved around which is bad for mpg. Recently I had to wait for somebody in my car and due to the heavy rain and high temperature I has to use the A/C for 50 mins while the car was idling. Result I had a horrible fuel consumption on the display (13L/100kms) for a diesel. Now even after 300 mile on the same tank my results are still lower than usual.

Your mileage will improve after the break-in period. Also, before you freak out too much, check your mileage the old fashion way:
  1. fill up to the brim
  2. Reset trip meter to zero
  3. Drive until the tank is almost empty
  4. Fill the tank again to the brim
  5. Divide the miles driven on the trip meter by the number of gallons pumped.
There's your miles per gallon.

If you do that and still come back with 14 mpg then its time to freak out. That's way to low. My 328i gets almost exactly what the window sticker says it should get. Yours should too.

With only 400 miles on the odom, you are probably on your first or second tank of gas. As others have said, either figure it the old fashion way, or fill up your tank, reset both the iDrive and the dash mpg values, and take the car on an extended road trip out of the city. On our last vacation trip driving mostly highways, I was getting about 33.5 - 33.8 mpg, with speeds of 75-80 mph and some mountain driving.

If the dealer used regular grade gasoline it will take a few tanks of premium to get things in order. Yes they do put regular in and tell you they don't.
My 328 xdrive was a dealer demo driven by one of the managers with 2700 on the clock, it idled rough and got poor mileage for about 5 tanks of high quality premium gas. Getting around 23-26 mixed city/ highway and much smoother idle.

If 300 of your total 400 miles are highway, that's extremely low.

Is this your first tank of fuel? You might just need to hit the BC button to reset the MPG counter. My '08 was reading 9MPG for the first while until I reset it. (obviously something wasn't quite cleared when I took delivery)

Math doesn't add up. If he did 300 miles highway @ 14.3mpg, his car should've been towed off the highway by running the gas empty.

My display shows 10mpg average in NYC. I am at the half way mark of my tank and it says 85 miles driven.
I use only shell V-Power. I always drive in Eco mode with auto on/off.
Used to get about 18 mpg before they did a transmission reset at the dealer.
Gonna have to touch base with them again sometime soon.

10MPG in Eco Pro? That is insane.. I will never complain about getting only 19 MPG in the city again.

That is too low.

In my experience new cars always use more petrol until run in.

As others have suggested, calculate it manually and then report back.

My old X5 used a lot of petrol but nowhere near as what you are reporting.

I am at exactly half gas tank. so 85 miles/7.95 gallons is roughly 10.69. I would assume that means the 10mpg is accurate. I will let the gas tank go to empty and report back.

In my opinion 14.3 MPG is very low for an 328i xDrive.

You should definitely be around 28-32 MPG if most of your driving is Highway and on Comfort Mode. I'd double check your Tire Pressure.

I'm bored. So here are some resources that i'd recommend checking out.

I will reset the trip meter and report back. I only drive my car on weekends since I live in NYC and commuting by public transportation to work is more economical. I won't be able to update my mpg for a while.

Who said it was only one tank of fuel?
