That does not sound like wastegate rattle... Definitely sounds like bottom-end related or maybe one of your pulleys are bad.

Pull your oil filter and see if it is full of metal flakes. If it is, time for a new motor unfortunately.

That sounds a lot like my car did when a rod bearing spun. Although there was one guy with a pretty similar sound and it ended up his belt partially shredded and was slapping stuff, so take a quick look at your belts too.

Here's my motor with the spun bearing:

How many miles did your motor have when it spun a bearing? This is like the 4th reference to this problem I've read on here this week. It's making me nervous!

OP, any update?

It has 124k miles on it and the shop said they're taking off the oil pan right now to inspect the bearings but they want 3000$ just to replace bearings...

This reminds me of my M5board.com days as every other thread related to S62 rod bearing issues. Are you the original owner OP?

I had 61k miles on the motor. Car was completely stock. I've read about this numerous times on other stock engines as well.

You'd probably be better off getting a lower mileage motor from a salvage yard. I got one that had 50k miles on it for $3700
