How much power can you run safely on an automatic
Hi all just curious to see what the power thresh hold is on the automatic transmission. I would like to crank out a little more power on the car but just want to know at what point im entering the danger zone. Thanks for the help

Well, that depends.
Year and model specifically. I personally would guesstimate you would have to be putting nearly 500 to the wheels to be even remotely concerned... |

Ours has a JB4, catless downpipes, CRX 12" intercooler and DCI intakes. I'm guessing it puts out in the low 400 hp range. Lot's of fun too.

My mechanic and tuner said 550TQ+ is where the issues start. Especially if you have an older model car.

I love all these guesstimates with no real hard evidence. I can too play that game and make up some numbers.

it's actually simple - the transmission is rated for a certain amount of torque (if it's a ZF, it's usually in the part # and is in NM). Anything above the rated value will shorten the life of the transmission, but not necessarily break it.
You could probably estimate how much life you'll take off with a given amount of torque input (HP is meaningless here), but really, unless you're double the stock torque you'll probably be bored and off to the next big thing before it makes a difference. |

Many guys have ran up to and around 550wtq with no issue. However, you need to make sure you are maintaining it meticulously and you are starting with a healthy tranny. If not, youll be looking for a new one soon. HP wise, you can go higher, as long as you keep torque low.
500-550 wtq has been the accepted limits for awhile now. |

Your driving a 07 335i Auto (same as me) and my first trans started to slip around 500+whp/wtq so i put in a newer stock auto trans. Lasted a couple thousand miles at 525whp and started to slip again past 500. dialed it back to 470 ish and its been good ever since.
These guys claiming 600+whp on stock auto trans are full of crap IMHO. They might get a dyno pull but as soon as you actually do some street runs/races back to back, it will NOT hold up. No point if its not reliable right? Who wants to keep throwing tranmission's in? 500whp is the absolute limit if you want it to last longer than a couple thousand miles. Period. |

Im surprised at how many people on here actually know the true limit. On N54tech they all believe 650wtq/whp is do able/safe LOL Last edited by natedog7700; 07-19-2016 at 11:50 AM.. |
