Question aout dealer scratching bumper

My car was in for servicing of an issue and I guess the rear bumper got scratched. No big deal, my SA immediately called me and informed me they're going to pay for a new bumper and painting, so I'm totally fine with it. Question is, I asked them if they could upgrade the bumper to an M sport rear bumper. Is there any reason they might deny this? I'm waiting to hear back monday if they'll do this instead since they're already paying for a whole new bumper.

I offered to pay any difference in costs if there are any.

Ask for a factory painted bumper. No paint shop(not even BMW VPC nor certified collision repair center) replicates what the factory can do.

If it's a scratch they'll just repaint, doubt they're going to pay for a new bumper.

I'm not that concerned. It's a lease I don't intend on keeping and I don't know that I believe it can't be matched. I was sideswiped by someone and the shop I went to (the one the dealership uses) matched the color perfectly!

I haven't seen the damage myself but it must be a much bigger issue than just a scratch because I was told right away that they weren't even going to bother repainting they were just getting a brand new bumper.

Well I got a call today form my SA. They were completely willing to upgrade the bumper at my expense, which I told them to do, but somehow the m sport bumper was over $700 more than a regular sport bumper? I told them to just stick with the regular bumper but now I'm wondering how it was over a $700 upgrade going off of values from getbmwparts. Anyone have any clue?

$700 sounds like the cost of the whole bumper. The M sport bumper can't possibly cost $700 more than regular bumper. I think your SA quoted you the cost of the whole bumper, not the difference between the two.

I believe this is correct you should double check.

I disagree. Paint is paint whether it was done at the factory or at a certified center.

I don't know the cost of the MSport bumper but remember the bumper comes unpainted. Cost of painting is part of the $700.00.

The color system used in CCRC is approved refinish product, and CCRC uses approved refinish process, but that's very different from factory paint and factory process.

$729 is MSRP of M sport bumper(rear). Local CCRCs ask for $180-$200 for 2-stage paint materials alone, and around $600 of labor(body + paint).

The non-M versus M rear bumper price difference should be $150-200 according to getbmwparts. The paint and labor cost for both should be compatible, so the dealer is charging $500 markup on the M rear bumper.

Thank you. Definitely an issue with the dealer.

Yeah I get that but they were (supposedly) already paying for the paint and the installation/labor costs, so literally the only upgrade was in the actual bumper which isn't $700 more than the regular bumper the car already had.

That's what I thought... Considering this was kind of a situation they could have stepped up considering how cool I was after they damaged my vehicle I'm about to email my SA and raise a bit of hell.

Do note that the M sport bumper will need new bumper reinforcement per part diagram, so there can be extra cost for the part(s). Ask the SA for the part(and price) list of the conversion.

Checking getbmwparts.com it appears that all supports, impact bars, etc. are the same part so literally the only thing that would be different would be the m sport bumper and the m lower trim part. And the difference in actual bumpers prices are only like $70 so really the only upgrade would be the lower trim piece... which isn't $700... IDK I guess I'll just see what they say tomorrow if they finally call me back.

Well just got off the phone with my SA. Apparently now they've decided the damage isn't bad enough that they can't just repair the bumper and repaint it... I'm not happy, and I 100% plan on letting the service manager know when they finish my car and I go to pick it up, that I wasn't notified that they changed plans and just didn't tell me. The only reason I was so easy going about the ordeal was because they promised a new bumper from the get go. I might just tell them not to send the survey because they'll be getting super low scores over this if they do.

If you're unhappy and they won't do what they promised get BMW NA involved. They tend to be very helpful in these sorts of situations.

Is it really a BMW NA issue though? Like the dealership said one thing and did another but technically the car is going to be 'fixed' up to standards that wouldn't really hurt the value of the car/to similar spec as the car was before they damaged it. I would think BMW NA wouldn't do much more if the dealer decides to take a hard stand against helping any further when I confront the service manager.

This. If the car is repaired to like new standards, there is no reason to complain.

This can be a good outcome as rear-only M bumper does look a bit odd, plus there can be issues at lease return with mismatched bumpers.
