Does abs sensor have to be OEM ?
Had my car in today to get my abs sensor replaced. Picked it up and was told that the sensor they ordered wouldn't work with the car and it would need to be a OEM bmw part fitted.
is this right ?

I assume you mean the wheel speed sensors? I just replaced 3 today in the hope of clearing a multitude of dash error lights. I didn't use OEM parts because I wasn't 100% sure that the sensors were the problem (error code stated 'direction detection') so instead of spending (and potentially wasting) close to £350 (for 4) from BMW I got mine from bavariandominator for £20 each. All the faults have been cleared so looks like they did the job. I guess longevity might be an issue compared to OEM but only time will tell...

If i bought an aftermarket sensor and it didn't work could it be returned even though it had been opened and fitted ?

In a nutshell no but sometimes when you fit an aftermarket part you can still get issues depends on who supplies the aftermarket parts TBH, but Euro's for instance supply Pagid stuff and on the whole seems to be OK overall but the safe bet if the sensor is the issue is for many to swallow the cost and go OEM

I replaced mine with a bavariandominator Sensor and still had the error pop up on the odd occasion, I then put a Genuine Sensor in which is made by "ATE" and all the issues were resolved. If you get an ATE Sensor it should be fine.

same issue for me. just bought a sensor for the front left, it cleared the sensor error, but changed to a direction detection. took the good sensor off the right hand side and swapped it over and the left is all clear but the direction detection error moved to the right hand side.
Am sending the cable back for a refund and getting my garage to supply and fit the next one.
