Very bizarre hitch receiver.
Just noticed this after a year of owning this '14 F31. Bought used so previous owner had this weird hitch installed with accompanying cap... Posted on another BMW forum but no luck. Does anybody have a clue what it is or how to use it?
Wondering if this bizarro receiver can be removed and replaced with something that would actually be useful. |

I'd assume you can remove it. Honestly, never seen anything like that before. I wonder if it was some proprietary bike rack or something? Looks like it was meant for holding something vertical, and not for towing.

Basic nuts/bolts..why couldn't you remove it? Pretty much a rusty eyesore.

Reminds me of a co-worker that ate a chicken ceasar salad with a Mountain Dew just before running the Boston Marathon. Let's just say he had to stop. |

Nothing bizarre about it.
That's actually an OEM BMW hitch / receiver / crossmember. Have one just like it on my X5. Looks like just a little light surface rust to me, nothing a little Tri-Flow would'nt take care of. Not an cheap hitch, built very solid. Depending on the vehicle I believe they are rated up To 6,000# That hitch will accept a BMW ball adapter or a BMW receiver tube adapter. https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...egoryID=184334 or http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...=529007&page=3 or http://www.bavauto.com/assets/inst_pages/ins429.pdf
