Had the dreaded "Overheating stop now" msg last night
So around 10pm last night I'm out with my family making a last stop at target for some necessities and get a red light and message saying to pull over engine is overheating. It was 91 Fahrenheit outside and my cars oil gauge was slightly below the mid point (normal). So I pull over and call for a tow. Car is dropped off at my local BMW dealer and I'm waiting to hear back from them about what the problem is.
My money's on it being a water pump and thankfully I bought an extended warranty when I purchased the car. Oh and btw the car is an 08 e90. With 73k. I will be cruising around in an X1 till this all gets fixed. |

Make sure they change out the thermostat while they're at it, even if you have to pay for the part. There shouldn't be any additional labor, and it's good preventative maintenance.

You know after having it happen twice at highway speeds I did not even think about to ask for that. I just tossed them the keys and said fix it. When I get home I can check out my bill and see if they did that or not.

Yup, water pump. I had my thermostat die earlier this year right at the end of my CPO. Then a couple months later my pump died. I changed the pump, it was not nearly as bad as I remember it being on my wife's n52. Only took about an hour and a half with fluid bleed.

I just got a call back from the dealer and it is indeed the water pump. Thankfully warranty is covering it. I just placed a call back to him asking about doing the thermostat as well and will update when I speak with him. So far so good though.

This process could not have gone any smoother. I had the car towed to the shop wends night and was back in it driving again by 4pm Thursday. My warranty company has been great (Zurich) My Service advisor had nothing but great things to say about working with them.
I did not opt to get the tstat done as my warranty will cover when/if it fails. The car was not ran long at all when this problem happened and the SA said no codes related to anything but the pump showed up. It's always nice when things go smoothly and I feel good that I was prepared. Only monies I spent were the $200 deductible for warranty. |
