Dilemma! 335xi M Performance heavy vs Stock 2016 340xi
Hi Guys,
2015 335xi, fully equipped with MPP (brakes, suspension, steering, etc.), MPE and MPPK Comes in Estoril with a few other nice options like 20in. black M wheels and M Performance aero kit Seller gives winter tires and mags. Only has 12,000km on it. 2016 340xi, with tech packages but fewer performance options. Comes in Silver with silver mags (would need to buy black wheels). Fleet demo with 600km that comes with a deeply discounted monthly payment. We’re talking a $200/mo. difference which I would reinvest in a JB4, a AWE exhaust and a sport cat. So for the same payment, I would still be short of the aero kit, the M performance package (so no boosted brakes, steering and suspension), but with quite a bit more power. Questions : I have read that power wise, 2015 33xi + MPPK = stock 2016 340xi. True? Will the 2016 stock brakes & suspensions be able to handle all the extra power from the JB4 + exhaust + sport cat? Which would go for? Thanks for answering this little riddle!! Melou |

Oh man that's a tough choice. I just went from a 335 xi to a 340 xi, similarly equipped. Biggest difference being that my 340 has the adaptive suspension.
The ride quality with the adaptive suspension is far superior to the base suspension, if handling and ride quality is something you care about above all i would highly recommend against going to a base suspension. As far as power, 340 > 335 + MPPK |

Tough call otherwise I suppose, unless you also plan to drop $ on the 340 for a third party suspension. At least imho.

Go with the 340. As BMW has grown into the mega company it's become the range of customers has grown from enthusiasts to a pretty wide range of customer. This results in some pretty lame machines trying to satisfy as many needs as possible. Eventually though enough enthusiast scream bloody murder and the auto mags slam BMW enough the message gets through and BMW starts to make cars they're known for. There must be some epic arguments in some boardroom somewhere but someone eventually gets some of what they want. The LCI version is pretty much the result of feedback from enthusiasts.
Don't get me wrong, the 335 is a good car and I seriously considered one but the 340 is the result of 335 customers bitching about what they didn't like. Not all issues were fixed but I suppose BMW isn't going to spend a huge amount on LCI when the g20 is only 3 years away. Ultimately you'd have to test both and judge. |

I did the 340xi with M adaptive from a 335 xi with Dinan S1. The 340 pulls harder all through the powerband.
At WOT, both are probably similar in power, but the 340 has a lot more power at lighter throttle (full torque vs the 335 which didn't seem to pull as hard at say 1/2 throttle). I thought I'd miss the 335, but not at all. The wife drove it the other day and did a "woa... this car has a lot more power than the other one". You can do a JB4 on it to put it close to 400HP. My only concern is the transmission torque ratings. From the dyno plots that Burger did, it appears the stock 340 is at/close to the maximum rated torque levels for the 8AT (450NM - 366ft/lbs). The JB4 even on map 1 would put it over that. |

Thank you all for the answers.
What do you guys think of adding the MPPK and MPE on the 340 while it's missing the MPP (brakes & adaptive suspension)? Some direct replies to you guys: That's hard to find in a lot up here! If I end up ordering a 2017 specced to my likings, I just might do that, especially given the info Wires mentions hereafter that the 8AT is all but capped on the torque rating. Quote:
