X5 or M3?
I am having a strange dilemma. I currently have a nearly loaded e90 335 and a 2005 TL Aspec (the wife's). I am planning on getting either a e90 M3 or a 4.8 X5 this fall. Both are about the same (M3 70k X5 77K) optioned how I want but I really need somthing in the SUV category for work reasons so my options are as follows:
Keep the 335 for the wife and trade the TL in for a X5 Keep the TL for the wife trade my 335 in for a M3 and an older truck or SUV I drove an X5 this weekend and like it but will definitely miss the power everyday of the 335. I am supposed to drive a M3 this week. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

So the M3 would just be a weekend car, and not a daily driver, correct? So if you get an older SUV, you'll likely drive it more often than the M3. I guess the question is, how much time do you want to spend in an older SUV vs. a brand new X5? Also, do you have room for 3 vehicles that won't require a lot of car shuffling all the time?
Also, I've got 3 vehicles in the driveway and only 2 drivers. I hate paying insurance for 3 cars, especially when the 3rd gets driven so little (Chevy S10 pickup.) I now pay $2,400/yr for insurance on all three vehicles. The damn 2003 S10 costs the same to insure as my 2007 335i!!! Anyway, even with those questions, I voted M3/SUV! Or the 3rd option, get the wife the X5 that you can use when you need it, and you get the M3! Win-Win!!

Are you going to use the SUV as a work truck causing a lot of wear and tear or just to haul boxes and stuff?
If you plan on beating the SUV up at all then go for a used vehicle. If not and you just want the extra room for seating then the e90 M3 should do fine at that. The 3rd row in the X5 is worthless for anyone older then 12y/o anyways.

I have an X5 4.8 and the wife has a 335 vert. I love the X5 and it will remain my DD when my M3 arrives in May. If you drive a lot, you might consider something other than an X5 - it's a great vehicle but I suspect that my M3 will be more economical than the X5. I have yet to average anything over 12 mpg on admittedly 90% city driving.
I would trade the TL, give the wife the 335 and get the M3. You could get the X5 but you might consider something else like a certified 5 series wagon? |

The X5's new 4.4 V8 TT is coming out soon, you might want to stayput for now.

The E70 4.8 is a bit of a let down. It squeaks left right and center and the ride is pretty harsh over poor surfaces. I wish I waited for the facelifted ML500 instead. The ML does 0-60 in 5.8 and has a proper ride.
