Intermittent directional fail

2009 LCI E90 blinker blinks when it wants to. When it doesn't, it looks identical to a bad bulb in the left rear. I changed out all the bulbs in the rear and cleaned the contacts on the tail light assembly. Smeared a little dielectric grease on there.Wondering if it could be a sticky relay or maybe even the switch on the stalk.

Looking for anything else to try..

Thanks

Not quite following you... so when it doesn't work, it looks like a bad left rear bulb... so all you are saying that when the blinker doesn't work, the bulb doesn't come on? What about the front bulb?

Try left, right, and hazard functions. Look at all the bulbs around the car. Report back.

The turn signals on E90 LCI tail lights are known to go bad. Only way to fix is to replace the whole tail lights. There's an official "repair kit" that includes two new outer tail lights if you search for it.

The first, next, thing i'm going to try is to get the german made bulbs,. I threw some cheapies in there and from what i've read , the resistance could be causing this. Feels that way, but if no, i'll research the repair kit.

Thanks

So, yes, when it's acting up, it just looks like the rear left bulb is bad. Front and side are rapid, right side of car is fine. Haven't checked hazards but i will.

Was also thinking to try LED, like these.

Anyone know if the 09 LCI requires the canbus light?

Like I said, the turn signal LEDs on the LCI are integrated and sealed into the housing and not user replaceable. You have to replace the entire tail light unit.

I had the same problem, it would blink normal for like 2 seconds then switch to blinking fast, I ordered a replacement taillight from rockauto and that fixed it.

If the rear signal lights are integrated LEDs, then how did you put cheap bulbs in?

Also, I think there may be different part numbers for the light assembly and the repair kit. It's the same thing, but the repair kit is cheaper. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember something like that.

The directionals are incandescent bulbs, my earlier post linking to the led's showed led's you can put in the regular socket.

Yeay,. i was online with ECS yesterday trying to find the right repair kit.

However, after trying what you suggested, regarding the hazard lights, all is not how I described.

I turned on the hazards while the problem was happening and the left rear, the troublesome one, was flashing dimly, and every few seconds, flickering brightly .

So, I turned the hazards off and got out to see what now, I noticed the left rear directional is actually flashing but dim when the fast flashing is happening. The front and side are normal brightness and fast.
