Combox retrofit help

Hi,

I am retrofitting my 2009 335i xDrive Coupe with a combox telematics (BN2000). I currently have the TCU and MULF2 with a CIC (options 639, 609 and 6FL)
So I removed the TCU and MULF-HI which is the easy part as shown below.

Below is the combox telematics I got.

After reviewing multiple threads regarding the Combox retrofit, the install seemed straight forward. Keep in mind coding is required and possibly flashing your CIC if you don't have the right version and you want to tap into other features like the internet, BMW apps, etc.

I removed the pins from the TCU (WHITE connector) and MULF-HI (BLUE connector) and used a combox blank connector (part#s 61136913644 & 61136913626) per the instructions I found in one of the threads I read.

Ofcourse the first obstacle i ran into is I have no slack in the wires from the TCU to plug the combox connector to the combox telematics when it is attached to the TCU/MULF2 bracket. So I decided to go the route of making the harness (I can't use the method of transferring the pins from the tcu and mulf to the combox connector not enough slack in the wire).
To make the harness you need for the TCU and MULF-HI to combox
- 2 × 61131393726 54pin kufatec connector (or one if you connect the MULF-HI wires directly to the Combox connector)
- 20 (I got 20) × 61131393723 male pins
- 20 (I got 20) × 61131393726 female pins
- 1 × 61136913644 CIC combox retrofit plug adapter connector socket
- 22 awg wire

I used the below table to create the combox retrofit harness for the TCU and pin the MULF-HI wires directly to the the combox connector

Below are two pictures of making the combox retrofit harness.

Second issue I ran into is the black cable from the MULF-HI (USB cable) will not reach out to the combox (black connector in above Combox telematics picture)......that's a problem but no one seems to have run into it or even mention it.

Also the 2 cables from the TCU (the telematics cables) in the below picture they do not fit in to the combox jacks as you can see in the above picture. The Bluetooth cable will fit by either buying an adapter or shaving the fin on the bottom left side of the white plug on the combox connector.

Below is how I ended up installing the combox telematics, as you can see I had to rotate the combox 180 degrees to avoid buying an USB extension cable. Also don't forget to disable the MOST connector that you don't end up using with the Combox.

Another thing the WHITE and BLUE connectors from the TCU and MULF-HI if you end up going with the route of making or buying a Combox retrofit harness, it will not fit into the Black Kufatek connectors (61131393726). The only way they will fit is you have to shave the fins on either side of the WHITE and/or BLUE connectors not a biggie to do. Hence, I opted of just moving the wires from the MULF-HI to the combox connector so all I needed to do is shave the fins on the WHITE (TCU) connector.

Below is the adapter to install the telematics cables.

Below is the cable extension I used to connect the bluetooth cable. With this I got more length and didn't need to shave the lower fin on the beige/white jack on the combox

This is a picture after using the adapters mentioned above.

I also got a longer USB cable which will allow me to rotate the combox 180 degrees and install like it is suppose to but as it is now it's alright. I also need to tap pins 5 and 6 from the Combox connector into the PDC HIGH/LOW and figure out if bmw assist can work.....

My friend Dumitru (forum member) just did finish flashing my CIC to v41 and did the coding. Now I have Connecteddrive Menu which houses BMW Online, BMW Apps, Internet and Plugins. (Will Add Pics)

I use Samsung Note 4 with Verizon service. To get Bluetooth tethering using my phone data plan so I can use BMW Online and Internet I had 2 options. In my case to activate Bluetooth tethering I need to pay for the service which I opted of doing. So I downloaded an app called "Bluetooth Tethering" that allowed me to activate the Bluetooth tethering option. (Will Add Pics)

If anyone needs flashing or coding I definitely would suggest contacting Dumitru, he will get the job done for you.

I just got mine from bimmertech and it came with some adapters. I will install it this weekend. You also have to get it coded to your car. Shoot them an email and they may be able to help with the adapters and the coding.

Thanks...I have the coding covered. I know some one who can code and flash the CIC if needed. My issue is getting the black cable reach and ofcourse need the combox retrofit harness. I guess I can see if they sell only the harness

My MULF USB cable (black) is short and doesn't reach to my combox connector. Does any one know if I can buy an extender or a new cable that is longer to replace the one I have.

Thanks

Does anyone have the list of pins to make the harness for combox to TCU+MULF. I found a couple but they it's different information and it's mostly for TCU only...
Thanks

Instead of using the GENERAL board, maybe you need to be over on the ConnectedDrive / I-Drive / Navigation Related Discussion board.

Hi, I did run into the same problem as you, the USB wire going to the combox was very short. But in my case, it was just long enough to work.

See here, http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1251039

Did you purchase an usb extension lead then?

Also, Android does not work with BMW apps, its iOS only.

Hi,

Anyone who did the retrofit can you share what menus you have under the ConnectedDrive menu. Also what do you have under BMW Online. I will share pics later of what I have. I have been researching and have seen other features that I don't have and was wondering why

Thanks

Ramez

i got my system fully working but one thing annoys me. When i was playing a song on my iphone it used to sit at the list of songs, now it defaults to the album cover and i have to click to go to the playlist list or current list of songs playing.

anyone know what needs to be coded to have it default to the list of songs? On the dual screen option, it still shows the album cover on the right side (under entertainment). I just hate staring at two album covers, one on left and one on right side of the screen--make sense? I want to disable one, but not the other. I know it is possible. it worked that way before i recoded the system to default to fix some other issues. now they are fixed but this is the result.

thanks.
