An alignemnet is an alignemnet, your son should have a book of the alignment specs for every car, if not he can look it up. Same procedure as a mercedes.

I can't speak to Mercedes, but I can to BMWs alignment requirements. On every BMW I've owned (4) the alignment procedure requires weights be added to the 2 front seats and trunk. If memory serves the front seat weight is 150 lbs each seat and the trunk is 75 pounds. One tech told me that some Hunter alignment machines compensate the settings to account for the weight at the locations mention above. It varies by model, but the alignment spec should be available to whomever is performing the alignment if they use a database for alignment specs. I'll caution you that I've had an alignment done outside of a BMW shop and two shops never got the car correctly aligned.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

He will be able to chexk and abjest everything that is adjustable. As long as the aligment mashin can read bmw vehicle specs.

Not true, i do aligments all the time and it rarely asks me to add weight. And also its not only bmw all german cars aske to add weight when doing aligment (sometimes not always).

That adding weight is required to get a good alignment.

I didn't say that. I said the procedure from BMW calls for adding weights. I separately stated that my experience with one of my cars was two independent alignment shops couldn't get the car aligned correctly, which was in response to the OP's question about if a Mercedes dealer could align his BMW.

Supposedly the newer Hunter alignment racks can take weight into account.

Typically-how long should an alignment last?-I had one done couple of months ago at main BMW dealers, but only worried because I drove over a 2 inch high length of wood whilst doing 50 mph on the motorway.

As long as your suspension components are in good shape, it should last you a year or more. You might see minor variations in alignment, but in general you should have it checked once a year. If it really gets off then you want to get it done soon.
