Winter setup questions. Front axle 640M also for the rear?

So...

I had a F31 wagon before and for the winter I had four front axle 400M to keep the width of the rear down.

But this isn't possible for the M2, right? I mean, buying four front axle 18" 640M with 8.5" width rather than two front and two rear with 8.5" front and 9" rear.

The tire recommendation for winter seems to be a square setup but with different width of the alloys. How come? Won't the front axle 640M fit on the rear axle?

I'm also not sure about the dimensions of the tires.

Standard is 245/35-19 front and 265/35-19 rear. This actually means that the diameter of the rear wheels are 14 mm (~half an inch) bigger. 654.1 mm front and 668.1 mm rear.

So... Recommendations for the winter is either square 235 or 245mm width.

235/45-18 => 668.7 mm diameter. Perfect for the rear. Only 0.6 mm off. Will it fit also in the front?
235/40-19 => 645.2 mm diameter. Too small?

245/40-18 => 653.2 mm diameter. Only 0.9 mm difference to the front originals. But smaller than the rears.
245/45-18 => 677.7 m diameter. Too large, but still legal. At least here. Max allowed deviation is +-5%. This would be "only" +3.61%.

I'm also thinking I want as much rubber as possible due to grip and comfort reasons. I also want my winters as narrow as possible. I'm thinking a square 235/45-18 setup would be perfect if it's not too narrow on those rear 640Ms? Which brings me back to the original question, can you use front 640Ms also at the rear?

I quite liked the gthal setup with non OEM VMR V710FFs. Where can I buy those in Europe? And is there an ET available that would go with 18" and 8.5" width?

I also need to find a set of wheels for the Swedish winter. When looking at aftermarket 18 inch wheels I dont know which ones will clear the brakes.

I tried to buy 4x9" but it was impossible. My BMW dealer told me the 640M's were only sold as a set of 2x8,5" an 2x9"

Strange. What if you bent your front two rims, you saying they'll not sell individually ?

To buy 4 fronts or 4 rears are of course possible. But will they fit?

I don't understand this either - but I'm not going to mess with it and will go with the 9" rears and the square set of tires. I think

Further information from a BMW specialist about the difference in height of the front and rears tyre choice BMW recommends on the 640M's (235/40/18 - 255/35/18) learned that the main reason should be searched in the total diameter of the wheel (rims+tyre). The diameter difference in height in case you choose for the different tyre width is 10mm. If you choose 255/40 in the rear, that makes a difference of 15mm and could become problematic for ABS and DTC. Secondly the aesthetic viewpoint front/rear.
Equal recommends were made earlier on the E46, E9x versions.
The better choose perhaps would be an equal tyre sizes all around...

FYI, I got the BMW M2 winter set (18" 640M's, staggered 235/255, Conti winter tires) for $2,500 CDN. YMMV, but it was hands down the best deal for me after shopping around. Not the greatest tires but hard to beat that price.

So here are the 640M's painted in Satin Black:

And now looking for rubber.
Most probably Michelin Alpin4 : front 235/40/18; rear 255/35/18

Thats right. If you can live with the silver grey of the OEM 640M's.For me that was a no go, so I let mine paint in the Satin Black. Rather expensive, but they did a very good job as the wheels were completely sand down first before repainting.

Quick update: my winter set actually came with Michelin Alpin4's instead of the Conti's as advertised by BMW, which is a big plus in my books!

Of course a big plus... Most probably I will buy the same set as you did. I suppose the rears are 255/35/18, the fronts 235/40/18 for a good understanding.

Yep, those are the sizes. For $2,500 CDN, hard to beat.

Correct - I had tried to search those Conti's and don't think they are even made anymore. RealOEM shows them as the Alpin4 so I was pretty sure that's what they were shipping.

Two things
1. What is making everyone go staggered?
2. My dealer tells me the RealOEM part numbers are incorrect? Anyone have the right ones?

Yeah the whole Conti thing is a huge error on their part. They've all been switched Alpins for 2016.

1) No need to go staggered, a 255 square set-up would work as well. The nice thing about the BMW set is warranty.

2) My guy is gone for the day but I'll ask and reply here tomorrow is someone hasn't yet.

No, 255 square.

In areas where snow is by times abundant, the 235's are a better option. BMW is a German car producer and usually they have relatively much snow during winter in most regions. For those areas with no or less snow the 255's in the rear are the better option as from tempatures beneath the 7°

That thread literally shows that set-up on an M2, which is why I posted it.

And doug_999 these would have to be aftermarket wheels. See the thread I posted.
