What happens next...?

Someone at work told me a story yesterday, see who can guess what happened next...

"We wanted to get a Range Rover Sport but the new ones are out of our price range so we decided on the previous shape....

...found a great deal for a white RRS in London, the lady owner was moving away so wanted a quick sale. We managed to get this car for £19,000 - at least £3-4,000 less than all the others we found, it's lovely....."

........

Well?

In one... of course...

"We got a letter from the DVLA saying someone else tried to register a car with the same 'plate and could we confirm the car was still ours. We checked the VIN on the windscreen, front panel and door - all different and none matched the V5... Took it to Landcover who disassembled the car to find the correct one, its stolen".

Funny thing is, the Police (Met) now say they have to keep it, insure and maintain it, and go to court with the insurance company to decide which party is most invested in the vehicle. Could take months but they have to keep paying for it

Seriously, who buys a car for that sort of money, from a private seller, but fails to check VIN numbers etc. They did an HPI check but the company is refusing to get involved because '...at the time of the check, the registration number provided was clear...'.

Knob heads.

It does sound ridiculous, but I do think a lot of people go on gut instinct.

When I sold my 6 year old X5 for low 5 figures, I put an ad on Pistonheads and had a call within a day or two from a potential buyer some 200 miles away. We discussed the car, and I had put a lot of detail in the ad, but he just transferred the money to me a day before even seeing it.

It was all genuine of course and the sale went through as planned, but it did surprise me that someone was willing to make a large irreversible transfer without even seeing the car. The buyer was intelligent and had a responsible job, but I doubt very much he would have exposed himself to as much risk for any other private purchase. Cars do seem to bring out the irrational side in many of us...

to be fair I think most car buyers would be happy if the HPI check was clear.

My gut instinct would be that this deal is too good to be true.

Sorry, some context...

It was white and my office is in the deepest, darkest depths of Essex.

For the HPI guarantee to kick in you have to provide the REG number, vin number and V5C serial number.

You're a fool if you don't at least check those.

Was about to write the same thing. You need to get a proper HPI check before it's worth anything

It's a mine field out there. Suddenly the +£4k the dealers ask, doesn't sound so expensive.

Agree 100%, if the purchaser is so concerned about a saving of £4k over dealer prices then I would say he probably can't afford to be running this type of vehicle in the first place.

That is the problem with these initially expensive 4x4s once they get into the 3rd and 4th owners many of them can just about scrape the cash up to buy the thing but have sod all left to maintain it. Hence why I often get a blast of black crap out of the back of the monstrocity every time they accelerate

I've noticed the same with 5-7 year old Audi's and BM's. Chavs can get into them now. They get them chipped and rag the arse out of them everywhere.

Then there's the tasteless modding. Don't get me started on that

When I sold my Landcruiser on Autotrader I had a lot of Nigerians offering me above the price so I could give their driver £5000 in cash so he could get back to Nigeria!

Yep the good thing with that scrappage deal was that it got a load of shite off of the roads.

Nothing will deter some from purchasing right at the top of their budget on the used market though and instead of maintaining them properly they insist on buying naff carbon add ons and big wheels etc instead
