Dealership changed my oil with 5W-30. Is this OK?

Hello all. Had the first oil change on my car not long ago and discovered the dealership used BMW synthetic 5W-30 oil. Apparently they do not have the new 0W-20 oil. Is this ok or what are you thoughts on this? Thanks so much!

5W-30 is one of the BMW approved grades so won't be an issue or effect warranty. Its whats in mine currently (UK car) but is also listed for North American market too.
As far as I'm aware 0W-20 isn't listed as an approved grade, but 0W-30 is. Both are 30 grade when hot and their winter rating is more or less the same 5 vs 0. 0 would be a fraction thinner when cold so would only be of added benefit if you get extremely cold winters, and even then there isn't a lot in it.

No way I'd let anyone put 0W-20 in my car. What they gave you is fine.

The sticker on the underside of my hood lists 0W-20.

Just being reading up on the introduction of the 0W-20 and its for the new B engines and the N20 so, yes, it is listed as approved for your car. Whether or not id want to switch if it had been broken in and running fine on 5W-30 is another matter. Their motivation seems to be marginally better fuel economy and not sure how a slightly thinner oil would effect engine component temperatures in hotter climates. If BMW say its good though

If 0W-20 is listed under the hood that's what they should have used. A BMW dealership and they don't have the recommended oil? That's BS.

I agree the 0-20 seems like the oil to use.

But the dealership will probably say the 0-20 oil isn't in stock because the cars don't need their oil service yet. Was this an early oil change before the cars maintenance computer calls for a change ?

What are the oils listed in the owners manual ?
