Rear LED Tail Lights, Sylvania and Philips: FAIL
So I thought I would check out LED tail lights.
I purchased set of Sylvania ZEVO LED 1156R and a set of Phillips 1156 stops. Both LEDs are red both manufactures make red, white and Phillips also make Amber. The bulbs in the rear tail lights except for the small halogen are all white (not red) P21W, 7506 incandescents. To remove the rear tail light you need a nut driver handle with a 10mm socket. 1. Remove the upper and lower 10mm bolts under the covers 2. Gently pull the lens straight out. The outer edge of the lens where the friction fit stud is takes a bit of pull. 3. Place the lens on a soft cloth or carpet and push down on the gray back and gently pop the plastic tabs. 4. Select the bulbs to replace 5. Reassemble Picture 1: The Sylvania ZEVO 1156R and Phillips 1156 red LED bulbs, purchased at Walmart and PepBoys, respectively. Picture 2: D/S tail light Picture 3: D/S tail light bulb housing removed from lens Picture 4: 2 Phillips 1156 light installed in the stop light and 1 clear stock 7506 bulb Picture 5: Same as 4 w/o 7506 Picture 6: D/S tail light plug. To remove pull up on gray tab and pull connector straight up. The connector is keyed (inside) so it can only go on one way. Picture 7: D/S tail light body area, upper left show hole for friction fit stud and upper right and lower right show 10mm posts. As you can see the LED are not as bright as the incandescent. So back in with the stock bulbs and LEDs to be returned. You may want to try the $80 LED other are using but myself. I'm done playing with this. |

I tried many LED lights and found these bulbs available from Amazon Prime work great on my M235i. They are much brighter than the stock incandescent bulbs have a warranty and only cost $23. per pair. There have been no errors or hyperflash. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._st_dp_summary

But last night, I started to get the hyperflash with my left rear turn signal, and an error popped up on my dash. So that was it. I returned to all OEM bulbs. Except the front turn signals. They've been fine (knock on wood). They too do a periodic flash, but that only happens during daylight (since that's when they are not on), and it doesn't bother me. My question- when they code out the "light check", would that also get rid of the hyperflash? Or is that another issue entirely? -c

I know I have seen bulb type in the BimmerCode app.. I bet that you have to code the lights to be LED and that might fix the brightness issue.

If your not after a brighter and therefore hotter bulb I don't get why people care that the bulb is LED or not other than longevity. When the stock bulb goes in 10 years I'll use these LED bulbs to replace them but no way am I wasting time and $100+ to switch to LED bulbs. |
