Are there any weird rules about buying a Canadian car and getting it registered in the US? Were there differences in the model spec/packages/coding?

Not sure about the differences in model specs etc, but if you're considering importing a car from Canada, there are definitely some things you'll have to do. Namely, you'll have to ensure the vehicle meets U.S. EPA standards or its marked somewhere on the vehicle that it is compliant - the alternative is obtaining a letter from BMW stating the Canadian vehicle is compliant with U.S. EPA standards. You will also need TONS of documentation...I recommend contacting the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration and request information on import regulations from Canada to the U.S.

Hope this is of some help, I almost imported a VW some years back from Canada...end of the day, it was going to be more of a headache than anything.
