Improving straight-line launch times (+ some accelerometer insights)
So, I bought a low-end accelerometer (K.A.T. Matrix 3-Axis, only about $102 from Amazon) to compare launch times on various small mods and different modes. It's a pretty good value-- more accurate than phone apps, and battery powered so you don't have to keep it permanently wired to your mirror ports. The only major downside is that some of the buttons are "sticky" and it takes some finagling to unstick them.
On a mostly stock 2016 M235i with 225/40 all-season tires + Eisenmann exhaust and Dinan intake, I got 4.84 seconds in Sport+ mode. When I tried Launch Control, the fish tailing was so bad that I'm sure it would have been 6+ seconds if I hadn't just stopped. I figured this might be because of my tires, so I replaced all of them with Michelin PSS (235 front, 245 rear) in the hope of improving traction. I attempted the same modes again: Sport+ ... 4.83 sec Launch Control ... 5.2 sec (FWIW, outside temperature was around 75, tires were warmed up from ~30 min of normal driving beforehand) The fish tailing was very slightly improved in Launch Control (subjective assessment), but as you can see, nowhere near Sport+. Other posters have commented that when magazines have tried out Launch Control, their times worsened. I always assumed (incorrectly?) that the 4.6 sec 0-60 time that BMW cites was in launch control, but maybe that's not the case? Is it worth it to try to improve traction with the MP LSD? Or get a tuner and not bother with Launch Control? Last edited by martopoulos; 10-29-2016 at 03:46 PM.. |

Welp, I just ordered the Dinan stage 3 ECU and Intercooler. I will report back with 0-60 times (and maybe a Dyno session) when they're installed. *Fingers crossed*

Any tests in DSC Off? I'm convinced more power is unleashed in this mode, at least in the 6MTs. On hard shifts, there's no delay in full power in this mode. In any other mode you feel the nannies trying to manage spin and power. My car is a different animal in DSC Off plus it's the only mode that the eLSD is active.

So, I found a new spot that's absolutely perfect (thank you, Google Earth). So perfect that two guys were down there racing with GoPros mounted on their roofs... Long stretch in an industrial park with a dead end.
The winning combination seemed to be long-pressing the DSC button to completely turn off DSC. 0-60 time was 4.57 sec. I also kept my foot on the brake until I had floored the gas to prevent the accelerometer from starting the clock prematurely (that alone didn't make a difference in launch time when I tested, for the record). I had no noticeable fish tailing or wheel-spin. As for starting in second, I noted that Sport+ does indeed start in second, FWIW. In other news, the Dinan stage 3 ECU and intercooler install is scheduled for Thursday, so I should have new numbers by the weekend. |

3.9 would be great! Haha - but I don't know - I'll remain skeptical of that time until I hit a strip.

Most accurate timing should be from a device using a relatively high GPS sample rate. This one samples position 20 times/sec which should provide an error of +/- 0.05s:

your best times will be with sport + using launch control.
my 60's are 1.6 - 1.8. 0-60 are 3.47s.

Do you have an LSD? Even with 245/40 Michelin PSS tires in the back, I still had so much fishtailing and wheelspin with Launch Control that my 0-60 didn't drop below 5.2. Also, what are you using to time your 0-60?
