Bluetooth, Aux, USB, what to do?
So I searched and read some threads. Basically what happened is, I very quickly had no idea what was being discussed, parts needed/use, much more complicated than what I am looking to do.
Very simply, I want to be able to play Spotify from my phone through my car. I have bluetooth and have hooked up the phone and used it but can't play music. I have a USB plug and AUX headphone style jack in the center console. I would like to use the USB plug so it can charge my phone at the same time but can't figure out how to get it to work. I know I can use the aux plug and that will work. My questions is can/how can I use my USB plug to play music? Thanks! |

The earlier versions of BMW Bluetooth did not allow for streaming music. As the system evolved it became possible. How to implement it in your car will depend on what is currently installed in there, which version of the iDrive, computers etc. there's a few threads talking about exactly that right now, have a look/chat in one of those and if doesn't work out we'll get back to this one.

Also Google 'BMW aux USB Y-cable' for a wired solution without going through bluetooth, but be warned that just plugging one of those in is not guaranteed to work unless your stereo is already coded with the USB option at least. It's not always as simple as plugging it in.

I bought a Kinivo BTC455 from Amazon for $40 and it works awesome with Bluetooth streaming so i can listen to Pandora, YouTube, etc..

At this point the simplest solution was just a $5.00 aux cable. I'm not terribly concerned about the cables and it sounds good enough for me. Like I said, I read a number of the other threads and had no idea what was being discussed. |

Your car has the 6FL factory option that provides connections and steering wheel controls when using the BMW iPhone cables, via the USB/aux receptacle. Note that both of the plugs are used simultaneously.
You could purchase a Tune2air unit that will sit in the console, about the size of a book of matches, and it will automatically pair with your phone when you start the vehicle. You will also be able to use the steering wheel controls via the wma3000b Tune2air unit. If you do not want to use wireless streaming, you can also purchase the special BMW "Y" cable for your iPhone... assuming that is what you have. You get the same functionality and the phone is charged via the cable. BMW cable for lightning and the older interface are available... but they must be from BMW as there is additional electronics in the cable housing itself. Edit: I also see 6VC Combox on your car, but no Bluetooth option so you may also be able to retrofit the Bluetooth kit. This will be more expensive than the wma3000b and more involved. |
