Do I have the perfect plan? 1 vs 2 vs 3 [wall of text?]

Today I have a M3 E46 that I totally love and it's been
mine for more than 3 years now.
I've made it my own with suttle CSL-details
and I didn't think for a second that I would be
thinking about swapping it.

The one and only reason I'm considering it is due to
reliability! It's an old car and it's bound to brake down
every now and then, but I don't get as much time driving and
enjoying the car like I did the first 2 years of ownership.

The M2 is the car I really want at the moment, but people still
asking too much for a used one and it also have some
depreciation to do, which I would like to avoid as much
as possible.

Since my car has gone up in value since I bought it I
thought it was a good idea to sell it and replace it with the other
baby M, the 1M coupe.

I wanna experince what all the fuzz is about! It's loved and hyped
in every single review I've ever seen/read.
Since the 1M seens to be holding it's value a 100% at the
moment it feels like a novrainer to go for a try! The VO is just
stunning aswell.

So is it a perfect plan? Anyone here owned all 3 cars?
It will indeed be difficult to sell the E46m because everytime
I look at it I get the fizz, can't be helped.

Can also add the prices for each car in Sweden:
m3 e46: I wont sell for less than 20 000$
1m coupe: theres only 1-5 for sale at a time, 43-48 000$
m2: roughly 60 000$

Cheers!

Edit: have driven the m2 twice(dct), haven't driven the 1m yet :/

IMO, you stated M3 is an old car and you want to get rid of it, why get a 1M which is another old car? I know its not as old as the M3 but still its old and dated to me. Also i would never buy a car just because it holds value or you can make money off it.

Get the M2

Even though the 1M's have only done 1800 miles compared
to my M3's 8500 miles?

I also lease a 2016 Volvo V40 T5 together with my girlfriend,
which has more in common with the M2 than the other 2(comfort, much newer etc.), would be nice to have a more analog M-car while I still have
the Volvo in the garage .

I wouldn't buy the 1M JUST because of it's resale value, if I don't like it I will not buy it of course! But it's kind of an important factor since I don't have
all the money in the world.

Buying a used car with low miles is scary to me. That means it's been sitting around a lot and not being driven like the car is supposed to. Earlier this year a local Benz dealer had a used 2013 M3 (AW with comp package, CF roof) for sale with 3000 miles. I went and looked at it which was nice but no way I would ever buy it because the car has been sitting around more than being driven on the road.

This is why i daily drive my M2, supposed to drive it everyday and enjoy

I'm so sorry! I think I missed a Zero.

The 1m's have done 18000-30000 miles, not 1800!!!

This is basically the same as my M3 e46, roughly 6000miles per year,
which is the common mileage for a sports car
that doesn't see any winter usage, which is about 5 months each
year in Sweden.

If my M3 would've done 8500 miles it would be worth a tone
more than 20k

Haha so sorry! I guess you can't go wrong, the problem is that I have to have the Valencia Orange, and for the M2 I craaave the LBB, such stunning colors.

I have a AW 1M (don't like orange personally) and recently got a Silver Gray E46 M3. I hear you on the 'old car' bit. The rod bearings on the S54...the VANOS... I got the E46 planning to refresh/restore everything so I could drive that more and put less miles on the 1M. I hoped that the E46 would be as much fun (or close) to drive as the 1M. I still have some ride height and alignment issues to sort out, but it's not even close. Sorry. It's a great car; I've always loved the E46, the look is classic and the 8K redline is awesome. The 1M though, it's just intoxicating! The short wheelbase and all that torque just makes it a blast to drive!
I haven't driven the M2 yet, but I bet it's close to the 1M.

Look up Chris Harris' tweets on the 1M vs M2 and 1M vs M3 CSL...

Can't wait for his next video, it's gonna be GOOD!

You don't have to be sorry mate, the M3 e46 is epic in it's own right, but I 100% believe
the 1M Coupe might be even better.
If everything goes the way I want it, me and the girlfriend might pickup a M135i/M140i instead of our current daily car, which leaves me with M3 e46 + M135i and I think I could live with that for a while ! Might replace the M3 as soon as the wallet accepts it.

Valencia Orange M135i + 1m coupe would be sick, thankfully thats my girlfriends favorite color as well.

Sounds like the op is considering going from a 15 year old car with 85,000 miles to either

- a 5 year old 1M that has 18-30,000 miles for 43-48,000

- A new M2 with 0 miles for 60,000

Assuming his E46 M3 sells for 20k then his options are to spend $23-28k to get into a 1M versus $40k to get to an M2 which would also have a warranty.

The M2 will likely depreciate and the 1M has held steady or gone up over 5 years.

It doesn't sound like @isty drives his car daily, or if he does then not a lot of mileage. The better buy actually would be a 1M for his purposes , particularly if he can get it on the low side of his figures.

Why pay as much as 50 to 80 percent more to get a 5 year newer car that has a warranty ? He doesn't have a warranty now .... And he's not likely to experience a ton of repair issues on a 30k mile 1M.

If the OP drove more, then I think a new M2 would be the better recommendation, but if he is not driving 10-15,000 miles a year then why buy a warranty ? In the U.S. an M2 comes with a 4 year warranty but typically a warranty in other countries is not that long and may be as short as just 2 years.

If @Isty puts 6k Miles a year on his new purchase in each of the next 5 years, a 1M with moderate mileage in the 50-65k range will be much preferred over an M2 with 30,000 miles .Heck.... the M2 will probably be worth around 40K and the 1M will be worth .. more .. ..

It also just occurred to me that some dude named Chris Harris just had the same decision to make .. and picked up a 1M... even after driving an M2 on the Norsdschleiffe ...

Thanks for summing up my problem perfectly .
At the end of the day I just have to wait for spring to arrive,
at the moment there is ONE 1m coupe for sale and it's in black,
I might look at the old way: import from Germany.

If I get 1M or keep the M3 they will be mainly used for trackdays
and some weekend drives, the M2 would be an everyday + trackday car
and that would be alot more expensive way than the other 2.

I'm wondering whether to sell my 3 month old M3 as it's now got 300 miles on the clock, and has been sitting around unused in my garage for 2 days now. My 335 has got a really high mileage now, almost 450 miles, but since my boyfriend has just bought a Ferrari 488 we're thinking of using that as a daily driver while he keeps his M4 for weekends, But I've got a brand new Lotus Evora which I think I'm going to keep for at least 2 weeks. I've got the use of my other boyfriend's Porsche 911S while he uses his Cayenne and I can't decide if I should also sell my RS3 as I can use my sister's Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder....
