BMW N20 228i Tuning

Hey guys, i have a 228i M sport with a straight through exhaust system from the downpipe, it sounds amazing. Now i dont know my intentions with the car but im looking to modify it and get it around the 300BHP mark. has anyone got a 228i pushing out 300+ BHp and if so, what would you recommend first? I have the exhaust system and a K&N intake but thats it! I cant decide whether i want to spend my money on cosmetics or performance!

Considering the N20 produces 240+hp stock, a simple Stage 2 upgrade (piggyback/ECU flash tune, catless DP, intake) should get you there easy.

There are a number of N20 owners who have their cars producing M235i levels of power and torque with simple bolt-on additions. But be warned: the N20 has reliability weaknesses above a certain HP.

Do a search for "Stage 2" in this subforum. You should have no problem figuring out what's needed.

(By the way: Sorry about the Wanderers. Hell of a falloff to have to endure ... )

i recommend JB4 + downpipe + intercooler + intake + charge pipe.

Do not push your car more than these mods since the N20/N26 is not the most reliable engine out there

This will get you well beyond 300whp, won't it?

With my n20 (328) I'm making 330lbft and 315HP to the wheels on Bootmod3 - ACF Performance Stage 3 tune with a Turbo Upgrade, GFB DV+, AFE intake, ATM FMIC, ER Charge pipes, ER Catted Downpipe, Supersprint front and Mid pipes to 335 rear muffler.

ACF have setup the tune for the upgraded Turbo pretty conservatively for now. I don't run any more boost or get any more torque than Stage 2 (330lbft) but the added flow capacity means we hold that target longer. So 330lbft gets 314HP at 5000rpm. Confident we can take it to 350HP by holding the higher boost target up to 5500 or 6000rpm. One of their Brazilian customers got 380HP, but that was on Flex fuel which is E110 (basically race gas).

Whats interesting to me is my cars torque output was ~317..not considerably lower than the 330 listed above. My hp was well below the 315 Stubok has @ 250hp...but I'm bonestock except for the flashed DME. I'd assume the additional mods help reliability at the higher rpms and HP..but you'd think off the line they'd be fairly close and I'd get walked around down the track...........

Off the line it will make almost no difference. There have been several n20 guys staying with stock n55's until the 60-80mph mark. Being lighter by about the weight of a medium sized man, the tuned n20 is quite feisty!

I'm at the stage now where I either stop or go all in. I'm not comfortable pushing the pistons, rods (and more seriously) the rod bolts past 340lbft, so either I trade up... or I go cray on this setup and do a closed deck with Forged Pistons and Rods with Carr rod bolts and head studs. Then I can throw more boost and rpm's at it and get into the 400's and maybe even 500's with a bigger compressor wheel and fuel-it.

certain person i know had a charge pipe blown and 2nd gear synchro replaced cause he went map 7 on a 335i with less then 9K miles on it and still got pulled on by me hehe.

Not only the weight but the 8 speed gear ratio is perfectly matched to the N20 powerband. That being said, if we apply same mods to a N55....
