Hello all,
Does anyone have any information on how to code the PCM to send the engine temperature information to the instrument cluster?

We coded the cluster to display the engine temp graph but there are no readings.

Seems as though the cluster is not getting the information from the PCM.

I am going to email my contacts at BMW NA and see what they can do. I think a PCM flash would do it.
Trick is trying to get them to do it.

Does this need a special parameter to read the temp? My odb2 reader only shows coolant temp.

The coolant temp is engine temp. BMW does not have a cylinder head temp sensor.

The problem with the after market vent gauge incerts is that they are not accurate.
When using my scan tools the temp on the after market gauge is to low.

How much of a difference did you see when compared to the vent guage?

Personally I'm looking for something to provide me with a relatively accurate guage of whether the engine is cold, near/around operating temps or beginning to over heat.....you know something like a traditional dash guage in terms of temp indication....if its 10-15 degrees off I'm not sure I really care you know what I mean?

Just a side note of BMW engine minutia , the B58 has a cylinder head component temperature sensor and a coolant temperature sensor. From page 39 of the B58 Engine Technical Training Manual describing the operation of the heat management module:

"The Digital Motor Electronics (DME) require elements including the coolant temperature from the coolant temperature sensor and the material temperature of the cylinder head from the component temperature sensor to correctly position the rotary valve."

Hello, I'm looking into this topic since a while. I just want any temperature reading from the engine in order to know when it's warm or also too hot. The hidden menu shows oil and water temp, so at least this is possible. Best would be to have it in the area where fuel gauge is shown.

I started coding and was able to enable the water temp graphic in BC, but it seems not to get any value and always stays in the most left position. Does anybody did find a solution for this?

It's not possible...

Your best option is using OBDII bluetooth adapter and OBDLink app

Sort of correct. The coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the head between cylinders 5 and 6.
