Exclamation M240i B58 engine first impressions...

Last week BMW delivered my 2017 Mineral Gray M240i. I had the M235i (a great car that only gave me smiles and fun).

But i have to say that i had higher expectactions about this car, specially on the acclaimed B58 engine.

Let's face it. This B58 engine is very quiet, sometimes i feel the car like it's an electric !! I feel the car emasculated.

I came from a M235i with M Performance Exhaust only and i already miss it. I miss that beatiful sound of the N55 engine. Those pops and tots and that burping sound...

Yes, 14HP and 50NM more is great but those guys in Munich removed the fun in this B58 engine and also in the M240i. They even removed the turbo blow of valve, a sound almost orgasmic for turbo enthusiasts (now the turbo boost is electronically controlled so the bov and it's beatiful sound is eliminated).

I ordered the new MPE and i hope this can improve the awful sound of the M240i.

New M240i owners, i wanna hear your touhgts...

Sad to hear. Hopefully aftermarket exhaust improve the sound. Have you tried forcing the valves open?

All you are really commenting on is the sound. How is the engine performance compared to the M235i?

Sounds good to me when in sport +. Just ordered catless downpipe, intake and jb4 for mine. Only 1,800 miles on it lol should make it sound a lot better.

Did you order the bundle? If not which are you going with? I want the same mods done once I break it in (at about 450 miles right now) and I'm leaning more towards waiting till more options come out for upgrades on our cars.

I also ordered the jb4, intake, and dp from x-ph. Waiting for it to arrive still. I personally think the m240i sounds better stock than the m235i stock. And OP should try Sport/Sport+ because mine burbles nicely in those modes. In Comfort and EcoPro it is quiet but that's because it's supposed to be a luxury car in those modes, not a bat out of hell. The DP should make the exhaust noticeably louder. I still need to disconnect the center speaker to see if the active sound goes away and I can really compare the DP addition.

Yes I ordered the ultimate combo deal from mike at extremepowerhouse. Couldn't pass up the deal 😬

Joe240 you know you can code ASD off? It really isn't hard and will cost you $17.95 for a cable.

I've had my 240 for about 3 weeks now. I agree that I prefer a louder car, but I love the engine. I'm coming from a 370z which was billed at functionally the same horsepower (though much less torque). It's night and day. The 240 feels faster in every range of the powerband. The power is also consistently available, which lines up with the dynos. Easily my favorite car I've owned. The 6 speed manual transmission is also the smoothest manual I've owned. The clutch in the 370z was garbage.

Yes but I can also disconnect the center speaker for free and see how I like it without the ASD. Also I really don't want to mess with coding at all until the warranty is up just in case. But I'd really like to add the auto unlock and auto fold in mirrors.

Is the deal a short time thing or is it year round? I want it, but don't want to buy it right now.

The combo year round is $997. For Black Friday it's an additional $50 off. Not sure how long they will keep the Black Friday sale going, but I got that Black Friday price last week

Can never go wrong with Akrapovic. Titanium makes the sexiest sounds when warmed up.

I picked up my new M240i last Monday. I only have a couple hundred miles on it so for. My previous car was a 2016 M235i.

The power increase is very noticeable, This thing is a freaking rocket ship, even compared to the M235i. The power/torque come on stronger and at a lower RPM. NO turbo lag at all!. I did notice minor turbo lag in my last car.

I also think it sounds great, better then the N55. I only had/have stock exhaust on both.

Just my .02.
