Deleted resonator today

I couldn't wait any longer for the awe midpipe and axleback to come out for my M240i. Today I went to an exhaust shop to cut the resonator out and weld in a straight pipe to hold me over until then. There are actually two resonators between the Downpipe and muffler, the first one is small and attached to a part of the exhaust that is large and oval shaped making it harder to work with. The second resonator (closer to the muffler) is the typical long cylinder style. That's the one I had them cut out and weld straight pipe in for $80. The results were best summed up by my girlfriend when she got in the car. "I thought you went and had your exhaust changed today?" A guy at the muffler shop asked if it got quieter. It's no big deal to me be needless to say, I wanted to let everyone know that there was no percieveable change. The wait continues for awe to come out with their solution...

Too bad to hear that...

I was expecting this would make our quiet 240's a bit louder and closer to the beatiful sound of the N55 engine...

After 4 days with the MPE, i have to say BMW didn't do a superb job with this exhaust... Like another member said, i think that MPE is a "rush hour job".

Why hasn't someone tried putting the m235i performance exhaust on the m240i? You get a valve for when you want it to be quiet, and it's cheaper and readily available...

Do you think removing both would be better? Or the first one you described just to much of a pain to mess with?

Too bad. Between my MPE and res-delete on my 235 it sounds pretty damn awesome especially cold starts and the downshift burbles. Why is the MPE on the 240 so different?

Thats a good thought and I was considering it but the people at the exhaust shop said the smaller resonator would make less of a difference (they're both hollow) than the one I removed. Plus, considering the higher difficulty for the odd shape, I didn't want to pay even more and hack up my exhaust too much for another negligible change.

So when did a different part number mean incompatibility?

A different part number means changes could have been made. Like the ///M logo being added, no electronically controlled flap, more filling in muffler for different/more quiet sound.

why didn't you go for a muffler delete instead? tried and proven to increase noise. I wouldn't even want to get the mpe after I had mine removed. waste of money.

as amack said.. just get a delete. More noise, no restriction, save weight.

MPE adds no power and minimal difference in sound. Waste of money.

Actually they are not both resonators. One is a resonator and the other is a secondary cat.

Have you heard the M240i with a muffler delete? Vids suck imo to hear the actual exhaust tone but vids help. Thinking about doing this. Thanks

Maybe I'm missing something. The MPE on my M235 is much louder, deeper, and fluid than stock plus it has tons more overrun. And it sounds glorious and slightly exotic with some sweet warble. I guess if you all you want is loud, drone (especially autos) and a lot more turbo hiss, then get a muffler delete.

Look at this video.

M Performance Exhaust with dual resonator delete. Pretty good i think.

Maybe the problem is that additional resonator BMW installed but you'll need the MPE.

That does sound good. I've contemplated that setup instead of waiting for awe to come out with something. The only holdup there is that I would want to just buy the whole midpipe at this point instead of cutting up my stock exhaust more.

To comment on the recommendations for a muffler delete, the videos sound good but without hearing it in person I'm afraid I wouldn't be happy with the possible drone and it may be too loud for my tastes.

I think this is the reason our cars are so quiet...

An aditional resonator was installed by BMW.
