B58 Long term consideration: LDS cylinder bore

One of the bigger changes with the inclusion of the B58 is the internals of the engine

http://youwheel.com/home/2016/03/27/...linder-engine/

Lots of really cool features to this engine, liquid to air intercooler, closed block design yada yada yada.....and its fun to drive

This is admittedly the first vehicle I've had that doesnt have sleeved cylinders which got me thinking about what happens down the road in the event of needing to rebuild the engine.

With a sleeved block engine its a pretty straightforward and not cost prohibitive process......

The B58 has a coating on the cylinder walls......the cylinder lining process is an electric wire arc/lds spray coating that is less than .5mm thick

Doesnt appear that boring it out is an option nor is re-application of the coating seemingly all that practical.....at least not yet.....seems like the equipment required is going to preclude your local engine rebuilder from being able to get set up for this

So what are the options long term?

New long block?

Is BMW going to be offering replacement short blocks with a core charge?

Why wouldn't a bore and sleeve job be an option? Would the cylinders even need to be re-bored? That coating is pretty tough so hopefully there isn't much damage to the walls over time.

Bore and sleeve does not appear to be an option....but maybe I am wrong

One of the reasons/advantages of the LDS spray coating is it saves space and weight and allows for better cooling properties within the block

So because you'd be shaving it away and adding a steel sleeve that would retain more heat, the engine would then run to hot? I'm just making sure I understand why the bore/sleeve option wouldn't work

I sleeve is a lot thicker than the coating is

P20 touches upon it

VANOS Concern

I would be more concerned with a VANOS failure on the B58. Not that it is prone to fail and it does have the 4th Gen of the VANOS unit.
.
But if it does fail (long term ownership) the engine has to be removed to replace the chain and overall system.
.
Not to mention the Oil Filter Housing is also in the rear next to the fire wall making any seal failure a difficult task replace.

Still hoping one of our BMW insiders will chime in on engine rebuild/replacement plans

Sounds like the engine is not rebuildable if it needs bore work so is there going to be a program to swap blocks with a core charge?

FYI, Ford (I believe) came up with this idea... and BMW adopted it.

Ford currently has this in the GT350. I'm thinking if its good enough for a high revving motor like that - we will be good for some time.

What ford adopted isnt really relevent to the question

How is BMW going to handle folks need to rebuild an engine periodically

Are they going to force folks to purchase complete crated engines?

Will there be complete short blocks avail or maybe stripped blocks?
