MPPSK "gunshots" sound

Hi guys,

I realize we have some discussion about the "gunshot" exhaust sound spread through some of the posts but would like to have a focused discussion.

Is it really as bad as some of the YouTube videos? Does it do it less as it breaks in? I like how controlled the drone is at cruising speed but I'm not sure I can deal with those gunshot sounds on my daily driver.

Just how prevalent is that sound?

its not that prevalent, i have trouble getting it even if i want to sometimes. you basically need to floor it in second or third gear up to around 6000rpm then immediately backoff gas and even then it doesnt do it all the time

Yeah i recently test drove a 340i MPPSK. The specialist told me to rev to 5k and then let off if you want gunshots. I loved it tbh. It was pretty crazy but i don't recall it being as crazy as the one in the vid. And I believe the car in the video has catless downpipe

Thanks guys. I went down to the dealer to drive one. I couldn't make it do gunshots :-)

You don't need a catless downpipe to do exactly what's in the OP's video. The exhaust needs to be hot, you need to have not done something similar in the past 30 seconds or so, you need to rev to about 5.5K or so and let off suddenly. It will do exactly as in the video.

That car in the video definitely has at the very least a catless downpipe, most likely more done to it. Also, base OEM and MPPSK have very faint backfires in comfort and eco mode, but become much more noticeable in sport and sport+. No where near what you hear in that video though. But it's nice to have the different driving modes to control the exhaust backfiring.

I've just bought a 340i F30 LCI Luxury Line with MPPSK. I'll know more next week.

Usually backfiring like that is caused by back-pressure in the turbo leftover after letting off the gas. And to my knowledge, there is no burble map available on the market yet for the B58 like there was for the n54 and 55's.

It all depends how you drive the car... I can get my stock exhaust to let off some pretty loud pops if I try.

Bring revs up over 5k and let off gas and you will probably get the pops, it doesn't just happen under normal load you need to work to have it happen only under hard acceleration.

Your use of "bad" does not compute. The gunshots are the best part of the MPPSK. I have a stock downpipe and mine can sound just like this video in certain circumstances. However the gunshots only come if you are driving aggressive and getting on and off the throttle rapidly, or if you are actively trying to get them (which I do often btw). In normal driving you won't notice them much.

How exactly is this a good thing? People who dont know any better will think you put too much VTEC in your car and now its broken. Cops might also give you shit for making them think there is a drive by going on. Sounds awful imo

I have to admit, haven't heard it in person. All the videos seem to agree on the gunshot sounds though. Its my subjective opinion it sounds awful it which is why I probably wont be getting MPPSK. Different strokes for different folks

I've got it and I've yet to see a video that accurately represents what I'm hearing. I agree it may not be for everyone but hear it in person before you make up your mind. For what it's worth, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! The extra power is awesome and the ability to be pretty civilized when you want to be, and over the top loud when you want to be make the car a lot more fun.

edit: OK so the extra power may only be "noticeable" instead of awesome, I guess I got carried away for a second, anyway I'm diggin my MPPSK.

Has nothing to do with backpressure. The noise you are hearing is unburnt fuel igniting so far past TDC (top dead center) that it is actually exploding with the exhaust valves already open, or in the turbine housing/downpipe. This is 99% because of the tune and the way fuel and ignition cut are timed in relation to you letting off the throttle.

I have an m performance exhaust on my 340i. It makes this cracking sound all the time when i get up to 5k and let go. I've also had a catless downpipe for a week with the MPE and these gunshot sounds are amplified quite significantly when they are paired together.

If you don't like the gunshots you could always rub some vagisil on your ears. . . will probably do the trick.

I kid, I kid.
