Future competitors to X3/X4 - and X1.

I am happy with my 2015 X4 35iM, but has started to look at a new vehicle in about 4 years time. I will keep my 1997 9000 Turbo.

I bought my X4 not because I needed the interior space, but for the I6 and ZF 8-speed - and for the looks.

I.e. I can slightly downsize or maintain current size.

I want a plug-in hybrid with e-AWD. This forces me to step down to transverse 4-cyl with rear electric drive. E-AWD gives better handling - especially on ice - compared to e.g. electric motor integrated in gearbox.

Currently I am looking at future X2, XC60 and E-Pace. All of which will be FWD and, in due corse, come out with e-AWD.

Hybrid Macan, X3, Evoque, XC60 and F-Pace are all in the pipeline for 2018-2019. The biggest difference between them will be electric only range but most importantly motorway performance. Hybrids are best if most of your driving is in town or you travel short distances.

If performance on snow and ice is important, would it be better to invest in the best winter tyres?

Crassus - I already have the best winter tyres - Conti Ice Contact - studded.

With e-AWD there is immediate respons at rear, while front is delayed 50-100 mS (SAAB has a delay of 80 mS), which means that rear will (if in a curve) start to slip away, but is automatically counter acted, when front kicks in. Works a treat!

"hybrid best for short trips" - I expect that in "Sport", there will be charging of battery while driving - unless rear traction is called for

All of the above will be introduced and might be interesting for a "typical" X3/X4 owner.

As I said - I can , slightly, downsize and had my fun with my petrol I6, so I can make do with a petrol 4 pot, but like to maintain my 300+ total bhp.

Budget is key for us, and so a good support (dealer) are essential ... So the choice is also linked to the dealer - we have a good BMW dealer and no Volvo or Porsche dealer locally - the Jag/Range Rover dealer is just too high end ....
Which is why we will probably stick with a lower spec BMW we can get at a good price, since BMW have a full range on offer - yes would love a high spec X3 3.5i but it does come down to ££ in the end.
So we hope to trade out X3 & i3 in for a base X3 hybrid next year?

plymjack, why don´t do a testdrive with X1?

Probably G01 will get hybrid - electric motor integrated in gearbox - in 2019.
Probably X1 will get hybrid - rear electric drive in 2019.

I would - probably - choose X1 hybrid.

Interesting. I didn't think of that. I haven't lived in Sweden in 9 years and haven't had to consider winter performance that much as we get little snow fall in England compared with where I'm from Gothenburg or even worse, Östersund where I lived in the early 90s.

A benefit of E-AWD is that you don't have to worry about whether the car has a Torsen or Haldex diff. The only possible disadvantage is if 100% of all available torque is required at the rear wheels but the electric motor at the axle only develops 150Nm.

I can't see a situation, where "all" torque is needed to the rear, but I will wait for a performance version with at least 200 - rather 300 Nm to rear.

With close to 300Nm up front, it will guarantee joy of driving - both summer and winter.

I believe first in line with this concept (in this size - XC90 already has it), will be Volvo XC60 - new version presented in Geneva beginning March.

XC60 was presented in Geneva today. To my mind it is a competitor to both X1/X2 and X3/X4. It will be inroduced with full line of engines (except an inline 6 ) including a 400+ bhp e-AWD.

I am a bit tentative to the interior.

I will still await X2 and E-Pace.

The new XC60 is a stunner but it won't be my next car unless it massively improves on the outgoing models which handles like a boat and nor confidence inspiring.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio will compete in X3/X4 class and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will compete in X3M/X4M class. Not bad looking at all IMO, but reliability remains to be seen. The Giulia Quadrifoglio took everyone by surprise. This isn't the same Alpha Romeo company from the 70's. BMW has to get the G01/G02 and the X3M/X4M right.

kozzi, the Alfa is very interesting- I am certain it will have very good performance/handling - problem is dealers and quality.

Nice colour on renderings/pictures.

Crassus, I have not looked closely at the XC90 - Volvo has not been on my radar, but since XC60 will have same architecture - somewhat scaled down, I checked:
-front suspension is SLA (Short Long Arm) double whishbones, first introduced by MB and Honda, which is one step better than McPherson.
-rear suspension is a mulitlink, very similar to BMW etc.

Also XC90 has had very good reviews - in the US and elsewhere.

Yupp. The XC90 has great reviews with is encouraging for the new XC60. Hopefully the T8 hybrid drivetrain has been improved too. There have been comments about MPG being terrible on motorways and cabin noise being high when the 4 pot is working hard.

On the positive note, I played with the configurator and saw that Adaptive suspension is an option which is fantastic as it will be a must for my next SUV. It's a superbly good looking car and I hope it delivers great reviews. However, my heart often has the final say about what car I buy, so if I try the next X3 and it makes me grin then I'll likely remain a BMW customer.

Similar to you, I'm on the fence about the Alfa. It needs to prove itself in reliability and build quality before I can seriously consider it. The same applies to the Jaguar F-Pace.

I would take a chance on Alpha Romeo quality over Land Rover. Land Rover designs some nice looking rides but the quality and dependability is absolute garbage. Maybe they have slowed down the downward spiral but I am not convinced...at your own risk indeed.

Yesterday I drove the new 2.0TDI Q5 with sport suspension on 18 inch alloys. It's a very lovely car. The drive train is more refined than the one in my X3. It's a very lovely car and if you don't demand high engagement and sharp handling, you will buy this car and be a very happy person.

Despite the sport suspension, there was nothing sporty about it, and if you didn't tell me it had sport suspension I wouldn't be able to tell. The ride was a bit bouncy but the steering is very artificial in feel, doesn't inspire confidence or offer feedback. It's a very different proposition to the X3.

However, it can be optioned with air suspension and a petrol engine. Those are two things the X3 don't offer in the UK and are reasons that could sway me away from X3 as the 20d is very noisy and the 30d a very big jump in price.

X3M vs Jeep Trackhawk?

fully loaded they will be around $75K vs $80K
~450hp vs 707hp
4200 lbs vs 5400lbs

I believe the Jeep is inbetween the X3 and X5 for size, but if you are looking at that price range I would assume you would be comparing both.

Jeep claiming 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and skidpad of 0.88g

The Jeep Grand Cherokee and the BMW X5 are almost identical in size so they are natural competitors and not so much an X3. That being said, the straight line speed with 700+ hp is going to be insane. Running 0-60 in 3.5 seconds is Hellcat territory and should hold a price tag well north of $80K. I would hold my breath and not try to steer this missile lol.

US Specific Press Release:

The first plug-in hybrid BMW Sports Activity Vehicle
Up to 13 miles of zero-tailpipe-emission pure electric driving
Preliminary fuel economy estimates up to 55 MPGe
0-60 mph in just 6.5 seconds

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. ? March 17, 2015 ? The BMW X5 xDrive40e, the company?s first plug-in hybrid Sports Activity Vehicle, charts the next chapter of BMW?s ongoing EfficientDynamics initiative. Benefitting from the groundbreaking work by BMW i on electromobility, the X5 xDrive40e combines the company?s award-winning 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery, integrated into its 8-speed automatic transmission. This newest BMW SAV can travel approximately 13 miles on pure electric power, ideally suited to short commutes and quick trips around town. Working in concert, the gasoline engine and electric motor puts out 308 horsepower and produces 332 lb-ft, enough to propel the X5 xDrive40e from 0-60mph in just 6.5 seconds. As the name implies, it features BMW xDrive, the company?s intelligent all-wheel drive system, for optimal stability and traction under all circumstances and road conditions. Early preliminary estimates put US EPA mileage estimates at 55 MPGe. The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e will arrive in US showrooms in the fall of 2015.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is the first plug-in hybrid production model from the core BMW brand. It combines the versatility and luxurious ambience of a full-sized Sports Activity Vehicle with the superb traction offered by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system as well as BMW EfficientDynamics eDrive technology for exemplary efficiency.

BMW eDrive technology provides exceptionally efficient performance as well as the potential for all-electric mobility with zero tailpipe emissions, ushering in a whole new form of driving experience in a Sports Activity Vehicle. At the same time, the BMW X5 xDrive40e reaps the benefits of the technology and know-how transferred from the debut of the BMW i cars. The BMW i8 blazes a trail for seamless blending of sustainability and The Ultimate Driving MachineTM driving thanks to plug-in hybrid drive power. These traits can now be enjoyed in a model from the core BMW brand.

Drive duo and permanent all-wheel drive for trademark driving pleasure and maximum efficiency.
Thanks to its duo of drive units, intelligent hybrid powertrain control and permanent all-wheel drive, the BMW X5 xDrive40e promises effortless performance and outstanding efficiency on the road. Its drive system comprises a four-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric motor integrated into the
8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery pack can be topped up from any 120-volt/15 amp electrical outlet or ? quickly and conveniently ? from the BMW Charging Station, as well as at public charging stations. The high-voltage battery, which also supplies power to the battery for the 12V electrical system via a voltage transformer, is housed underneath the luggage compartment floor, where it is particularly well protected in the event of a crash. The BMW X5 xDrive40e offers a luggage capacity of 34.2 ? 72.5 cubic feet. The plug-in hybrid model thus provides all the versatility associated with a full-sized sports activity vehicle in terms of not just its driving qualities but also its levels of spaciousness.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e furthermore succeeds in fusing its versatility and poise with a level of efficiency that simply places it in a class of its own. Short everyday journeys up to 13 miles can be easily completed with zero tailpipe emissions, while actual fuel consumption is reduced substantially when driving for longer distances. Capable of consuming zero fuel in electric mode, according to early preliminary estimates the BMW X5 xDrive40e is rated at 55 MPGe, based on early preliminary estimates, setting new benchmarks for efficiency in its segment. On longer journeys, when both engine and motor need to be deployed, the powertrain system which has been systematically geared towards maximizing efficiency keeps the fuel consumption and emissions figures far lower than in comparable models with similar power output. The plug-in hybrid drive system in the BMW X5 xDrive40e produces major efficiency savings in everyday driving situations when compared to conventionally powered models in this segment.

BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technologies mated to perfection.
The 2.0-liter four cylinder in the BMW X5 xDrive40e has already won the coveted title of ?International Engine of the Year? three times, as well as having been named to Ward?s ?10 Best Engines?, and features a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and variable camshaft control on both the intake and exhaust sides (Double-VANOS). It generates a maximum output of 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of peak torque.

The electric motor provides output of 111 hp, while its maximum torque of 184 lb-ft is available from the word go in typical electric drive fashion. This has the effect of boosting the engine?s output for thrilling, instantaneous responsiveness and power build-up with absolutely no delay when accelerating from stationary, as well as far more dynamic performance whenever a quick burst of speed is required. The BMW X5 xDrive40e completes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. In all-electric drive mode the vehicle is capable of a top speed of 75 mph, again electronically limited.

BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel drive even in all-electric mode.
The power stemming from the two drive units is transformed into effortless forward motion courtesy of the 8-speed Steptronic transmission and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The BMW X5 xDrive40e can be optionally equipped with shift paddles on the steering wheel, enabling the driver to swiftly make manual gear selections with the greatest of ease. Regardless of the proportion of drive power being sourced from the engine and motor respectively, xDrive ensures optimal traction in all weather and road surface conditions, together with optimized handling stability and increased agility when powering through corners. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch provides the basis for fully variable distribution of the drive torque between the front and rear wheels. xDrive is linked up to the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), making it capable of acting in advance to counter vehicle understeer or oversteer and to always direct drive power in such a way as to optimize the handling dynamics.

Driving Dynamics Control switch and eDrive button allow the vehicle set-up and powertrain control to be configured as desired.
The eDrive button on the center console lets the driver modify the powertrain control. When the vehicle is first started, the default AUTO eDrive setting is activated, with both engine and electric motor working efficiently in tandem. The electric motor alone is used for setting off with normal power requirements, while the engine cuts in at around 45 mph or when the driver wishes to accelerate very sharply. In this mode, the intelligent operating strategy determines the most efficient drive combination at all times and switches to it automatically. The driver can also switch to the all-electric drive mode setting MAX eDrive, in which the vehicle is powered solely by the electric motor. This mode is designed for comfortable driving with zero local emissions without the engine being started, and offers a maximum range of 13 miles at a limited top speed of 75 mph.

The third mode that can be activated is the SAVE Battery setting, which allows the driver to save or build up the high-voltage battery?s energy reserves for a later point in time. When driving on the highway, for instance, the state of charge can be kept constant or even boosted in order to use the high-voltage battery?s power for all-electric driving in urban areas later in the journey. In this way, the stored electrical energy can be selectively deployed exactly when required.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e also comes standard with a Driving Dynamics Control switch, just like the conventionally powered model variants of the sports activity vehicle. This can be used to activate the vehicle set-up modes COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO, which each have the effect of altering the throttle mapping, the steering characteristics, the responses of the 8?speed Steptronic transmission, as well as the characteristics of the standard Dynamic Damper Control on the BMW X5 xDrive40e. The ECO PRO mode triggers efficiency-optimized control of electrically powered comfort functions, such as the air conditioning, seat heating and heated mirrors. Besides this, when the driver?s foot is off the accelerator at speeds between 0 and 100 mph, the coasting function shuts off the engine, allowing the vehicle to glide along without burning any fuel.

The modes selectable with the eDrive button and the Driving Dynamics Control switch can be combined with one another at will, allowing the powertrain control and vehicle set-up to be tailored precisely to the prevailing situation and the driver?s personal preferences. In this way, comfort, sportiness and efficiency can each be combined with high-intensity hybrid driving as desired.

Instrument cluster and Control Display with hybrid-specific readouts.
The BMW X5 xDrive40e features a black-panel instrument cluster with enhanced hybrid-specific functions added to its array of readouts. The drive readiness display positioned in the lower part of the tachometer switches from ?OFF? to ?READY? when the start/stop button is pressed. The high-voltage battery?s state of charge is visualized in the form of a battery symbol below the gear display. The Driving Dynamics Control switch setting is also indicated, as is the operating mode selected with the eDrive button. Depending on the selected drive mode, information on the vehicle?s electric and total range, current fuel or electricity consumption, recuperation of electrical energy in the high-voltage battery and the progress of vehicle charging can likewise all be shown in the instrument cluster.

Model-specific menu options and readouts are also available in the iDrive operating system?s Control Display. An energy flow display can be called up while on the move, illustrating in graphical form the interaction between combustion engine and electric motor as well as how energy is being fed to the high-voltage battery. Charging of the battery from the power grid can also be controlled from the iDrive menu using a timer function, which can factor in a planned departure time as entered by the driver. In addition to this, preconditioning of both the interior and the battery can be programmed in the iDrive menu. Timer-controlled cooling or heating ensures a pleasant temperature inside the passenger compartment ready for the start of the journey, while the high-voltage battery can also be cooled so that it is in an optimum operating state at the time of departure. The electrically powered auxiliary heating and ventilation function is also part of the standard specification on the BMW X5 xDrive40e. It can either run on grid power during vehicle charging or be powered by the high-voltage battery if it has sufficient capacity.

BMW X5 xDrive40e: a classic sports activity vehicle offering unique hybrid performance.
Exclusive, bespoke design touches on the model?s exterior clearly identify the BMW X5 xDrive40e as a classic sports activity vehicle while also making its unique hybrid capabilities plain to see. The most noticeable feature is the charging connection for the high-voltage battery located in the left front fender. Blue light effects also appear here at the start of the charging process to indicate the flow of energy. The exhaust system on the BMW X5 xDrive40e has a twin-tailpipe design with trapezoidal tips. Besides the model badge at the front of the vehicle?s flanks, the ?eDrive? logo, already familiar from the BMW i models, graces the tailgate and door sills with their blue background as well as the center console.

Apart from Dynamic Damper Control, the standard specification for the BMW X5 xDrive40e also includes self-levelling rear air suspension. The 2?zone automatic climate control that is standard on all BMW X5 models extended to include an auxiliary heating and ventilation system comprising an electric instantaneous water heater and an electric refrigerant compressor. In addition to this, all of the optional extras from the BMW X5 range are available, with the exception of the third row of seats, the Adaptive M Suspension, Active Steering and comfort seats in the rear. The Adaptive LED Headlights, Comfort Access, as well as the full selection of 19- and 20-inch light-alloy wheels, are available to order for the BMW X5 xDrive40e.

Highly versatile charging options as well ? thanks to pioneering products and services from BMW 360° ELECTRIC.
The plug-in hybrid design of the BMW X5 xDrive40e provides the ideal basis for extensive use of the electric drive system for highly efficient mobility, even including urban driving with zero tailpipe emissions. Its high-voltage battery offers a gross energy capacity of 9.0 kilowatt hours (kWh) and can be topped up with energy from a home charging station, like the BMW i Charging Station, as well as at public charging stations. With an occasional use charger, the BMW xDrive40e can be charged from a standard 120-volt outlet.

A tailor-made solution for safe, simple and extra-fast battery charging at home is available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC. The BMW Charging Station is capable of replenishing the high-voltage battery at a charging rate of 3.5 kW (16 A/220 V). As a result, it takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to fully recharge an empty battery pack. Charging progress can be checked on a graphic displayed in the vehicle?s instrument cluster or on a smartphone using the BMW Remote app. The data displayed on the monitor includes the quantity of energy supplied and information on preceding charge cycles.

Under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC customers are offered an all-embracing service concept covering everything from the supply and installation of the charging station to maintenance, support and other services. There is also the ChargeNow service, comprising a ChargeNow card that grants access to the entire network of ChargePoint public charging stations nationwide. Beyond this, the BMW 360° ELECTRIC portfolio also comprises BMW Solar and ParkNow Long Term programs as well as maintenance, assistance and other customer services that have been specially tailored to this model and eMobility.

Innovative new functions from BMW ConnectedDrive furthermore help to plan journeys in such a way that the vehicle drives on electric power alone as much as possible and at maximum efficiency at all times. The Navigation Professional system fitted in the BMW X5 xDrive40e gives drivers the option of calculating a hybrid-specific ECO PRO route to an entered destination, which makes allowance for factors such as the traffic situation, the route profile and driving style. The intelligent energy management function in the BMW X5 xDrive40e utilizes the available data on the route profile for all navigation-assisted journeys anyway, together with real-time traffic information. This forms the basis for anticipatory and efficiency-optimized powertrain control that keeps fuel consumption as low as possible while making intensive use of electric mobility, for example when nearing the journey?s destination. On a longer journey that goes through both rural and built-up areas, for instance, Brake Energy Regeneration can be employed and the engine?s load points deliberately raised at higher speeds to ensure there are sufficient power reserves for completing the urban sections in all-electric drive mode. What?s more, the locations of public charging stations are added to the selection of points of interest on the navigation map whenever route guidance is activated.

The BMW Remote app also comes in a hybrid-specific version and lets the driver retrieve information on the high-voltage battery?s state of charge even when they are away from the vehicle by using a smartphone. The app also displays the location of public charging stations. Efficiency evaluations for the last journey completed can be viewed on the smartphone as well, along with the total distance driven purely on electric power and the amount of fuel saved by using grid power. The auxiliary heating and ventilation functions of the BMW X5 xDrive40e can similarly be activated to heat or cool the interior prior to departure.

Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant: centre of excellence for BMW X models and hybrid technology.
The BMW X5 xDrive40e is being produced at the BMW Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. This is where all other model variants of the sports activity vehicle are also built along with the BMW X6, BMW X3 and BMW X4 models. It has been over 15 years since the first-generation BMW X5 went into production. Since then, this US plant has evolved into the global center of excellence for BMW X models.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is assembled in parallel with both the other model variants of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 on a shared production line. Special assembly steps have been added to the manufacturing process for integrating the hybrid-specific components. The high-voltage battery is manufactured in a newly constructed production hall on the site of the BMW Spartanburg plant. All production processes are subject to the same strict quality and safety standards that the BMW Group applies worldwide. The BMW Spartanburg plant stands out for its resource-efficient system of energy supply. It was here that the intelligent Energy Data Management System (iEDMS) with continuous and comparative power consumption measurement was first implemented. Moreover, a large part of the energy required for vehicle production is obtained from methane gas, sourced from a nearby landfill, with the help of highly efficient turbine generators.

GLOBAL PRESS RELEASE

March 14, 2015

The first plug-in hybrid production car from the BMW core brand is a Sports Activity Vehicle. Permanent all-wheel drive and the BMW EfficientDynamics eDrive technology endow the BMW X5 xDrive40e with sensational sportiness and supreme poise on the one hand and outstanding efficiency on the other. With a total system output of 230 kW/313 hp generated by a four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric motor, the BMW X5 xDrive40e achieves a combined fuel consumption of 3.4 ? 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres (83.1 ? 85.6 mpg imp) and a combined electricity consumption of 15.4 ? 15.3 kWh over the same distance. CO2 emissions come in at 78 ? 77 grams per kilometre (figures according to EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, may vary depending on the tyre format specified).

The use of BMW eDrive technology for exceptionally efficient performance as well as all-electric mobility with zero tailpipe emissions as and when required ushers in a whole new form of commanding driving experience in a sports activity vehicle. At the same time, the BMW X5 xDrive40e reaps the benefits of the technology and know-how transferred from the debut of the BMW i cars. The BMW i8 blazes a trail for sustainable driving pleasure with plug-in hybrid drive power, which can now also be enjoyed for the first time in a model from the BMW core brand.

Lithium-ion battery with flexible charging options, typical SAV versatility and an exclusive ambience.

The energy for the electric motor integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic transmission is drawn from a lithium-ion battery, which also supplies power to the low-voltage battery for the 12V electrical system aboard the BMW X5 xDrive40e via a voltage transformer. It can be recharged by connecting to any standard domestic power socket or a BMW i Wallbox, as well as at public charging stations. To save space the high-voltage battery is housed underneath the luggage compartment floor, where it is also particularly well protected in the event of a crash. With 500 ? 1,720 litres of luggage space, a three-part folding rear backrest and a luxuriously designed interior, the BMW X5 xDrive40e also boasts the high versatility associated with a large sports activity vehicle but blended with an exclusive ambience.

Intelligent powertrain control and eDrive button for intense hybrid driving and mobility with zero local emissions.

The actual driving experience is likewise characterised by versatile and effortless performance. The intelligent hybrid powertrain control ensures that the engine and the electric motor act in unison in a way that optimises efficiency while also catering perfectly to the driver?s wishes. The eDrive button on the centre console allows the driver to adjust the hybrid drive?s operating mode. In the AUTO eDrive basic setting, the engine?s power is boosted to noticeable effect when accelerating or during quick bursts of speed by the electric drive, whose full torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) is on tap from standstill for instantaneous power delivery. The BMW X5 xDrive40e completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.8 seconds.
Alternatively, the MAX eDrive mode can be engaged, enabling the BMW X5 xDrive40e to run purely on electric power ? when driving in urban traffic for instance ? resulting in zero local emissions. When the high-voltage battery is fully charged, the vehicle has a range of up to 31 kilometres (approx. 19 miles) in the all-electric drive mode with a limited maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). The SAVE Battery mode can also be activated at the touch of a button, causing the high-voltage battery?s state of charge to be maintained or allowing energy to be accumulated again, e.g. by means of recuperation, if capacity is low. In this way, electrical energy can be deliberately conserved for all-electric driving later in the journey.
Regardless of the setting chosen with the eDrive button, the power stemming from both drive sources is permanently transmitted to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, BMW xDrive. The various vehicle set-ups that can be selected with the Driving Experience Control switch ? COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO ? are also available in all drive modes.

Hybrid-specific products and services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW 360° ELECTRIC.

All of the driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive offered as standard or as optional extras for the BMW X5 are also available to provide enhanced driving pleasure in the model variant with eDrive technology. An intelligent energy management function is also offered as a special model-specific feature that can be used in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional which is fitted as standard in the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Whenever route guidance is active, data on the route profile is factored into powertrain control along with real-time traffic information. When driving medium to long distances, the system can therefore ensure it is possible to drive purely on electric power on urban sections by using Brake Energy Regeneration and managing the high-voltage battery?s energy reserves in a targeted and efficient manner.
The hybrid-specific version of the BMW Remote app makes it possible to check the high-voltage battery?s state of charge, locate public charging stations or call up efficiency evaluations for the BMW X5 xDrive40e on a smartphone. The auxiliary heating and ventilation functions can also be activated remotely.

The BMW i Wallbox Pure and BMW i Wallbox Pro, including installation service, are available for home charging as part of the BMW 360° ELECTRIC concept, offering customers a particularly fast and convenient means of recharging the high-voltage battery while parked. Model-specific assistance services are also available. The ChargeNow service provides cash-free access to an extensive partner network of charging stations and billing of the charging costs with the ChargeNow card. The mobility service ParkNow Longterm, meanwhile, makes it easier to find a parking space or locate and book a parking spot with charging facilities.

Wide-ranging equipment options.

The comprehensive standard specification of the BMW X5 on the plug-in hybrid model is extended to include the Navigation system Professional as well as an auxiliary heating and ventilation system. This is powered by electricity from the high-voltage battery or from the mains supply while charging. The BMW X5 xDrive40e additionally comes equipped as standard with the Adaptive Suspension Package Comfort including rear air suspension and Dynamic Damper Control.

Beyond this, practically all the optional extras offered for the BMW X5 can also be specified for the plug-in hybrid model. The Design Pure Experience and Pure Excellence packages for the exterior and interior are also available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e, as are the M Sport package and the bespoke features from BMW Individual.

I get 24mpg in my 35d, city, and regularly over 34mpg on hwy. There are some users with posted shots of nearly 40mpg....there is a thread in the F15 section.

83-85, is tough to believe, but I would not be at all surprised if it did mid 60s.

Exactly. I'm not sure what is the point of this press release (or whatever it is). I don't think there is any info here that I haven't seen before. Maybe this is confirming what was previously just considered rumors? Is this like an official BMW press release? What's the point without info on when and how much?

Only because driving it fast is so addictive haha - If we drove a car with a traditional engine and no electric drive for something of similar performance we'd be getting in the teens for consumption! haha

If I drive 'normally', as in how I do in traffic, I get around 55-60mpg. Not bad, no?

If I really tried, I could get a lot higher but I enjoy the drive so what the heck

I would. I could go back and forth to work without the engine ever starting. I could plug it in at work, free, and plug it in in my garage. I could go to the gym to work out and/or go to the grocery store. I could easily go for a week or two at a time of daily use without the engine ever starting. (I live in a pretty small town). Yet I still would have a fully capable SUV for longer trips without worring about range or finding charging stations. That is important because the reality of most people's finances is that they can't afford to invest the captial to have three or four specialised vehicles... an electric, a fun/sporty, a 4x4 for winter, a GT, or whatever. This vehicle would fulfill all the needs that my current X5 fulfills, while at the same time adding a whole new dimension... electric. Fully electric cars just aren't there yet, at least for my needs. Regular hybrids have proven to be not really worth the investment. They cost thousands more with very small increases in gas mileage compared to a comparable non-hybrid vehicle. The "plug-in" part of a plug-in hybrid is the bridge that really makes it a realistic and beneficial option in my opinion.

Moving into the future, awesome!

My old mid 1980s Volvo 240 DL Stick Shift was awesome! But the new Volvos suck big time I can not recommend. The S80 is crap, a boat on wheels. Stick with BMW!!!

I would now go only go with the M4 xDrive, X4M & i8. And if they designed the i3 to actually look like a 3 Series then that as well because it drives great!

I am sure the X5 will be a sportier drive but, in comparison with the T8, it seems just sooo last century.

BMW has sadly missed the opportunity to add that little bit of extra magic to this, their first 'core brand' plug-in hybrid but instead have just added a battery to a standard X5.

The T8 however coincides with a complete refresh of the XC90 and, in my opinion just makes the X5 look old, dated and rather boring.

And, losing the 7 seat capability in the 40e will shift a whole lot of buyers toward the Swede anyway.

This just shows, bolting a battery onto a legacy vehicle not designed for this purpose means that you'll end up having to make too many space compromises.

The 40e probably drives a little more dynamic compared to the T8 but as for the rest - worlds apart! The Beemer has now been in development for years but the final release doesn't seem to show any improvements on what was first teased so many car shows ago - looks like most of BMW's engineers were focused on developing the new 2-Series.

I was waiting for the official details on this one before deciding what to buy next but, I'm afraid, after choosing BMW for my last 5 vehicles it's a case of too little too late.

Now, where's my nearest Volvo dealership....

There are some criticism that XC90 T8 has too short e-drive performance- X540e will have even shorter. Both will - probably - be upgraded in next generation.

They are, however, far above X3/X4 budget.

A few weeks ago I had a close look at the new XC60. Volvo have nailed the design. It looks french and less bulbous than the old model.

Because it will be Volvo's top selling model internationally, they have decided that cost-cutting is the way to increase margins. The interior quality is disappointing. The doors panels are very cheap, have no trim and only made using a single material that isn't foamy plastic. It's the type of door panel you would expect in a Renault, Chrysler or similar.

I thought I was too critical but jumping into the V90, which has slightly lower asking price, validated my impression of the XC60: Volvo have substituted many premium materials in XC90 and V90 for cheap ones in the XC60.

It's simply not premium enough for me, and definitely doesn't hold a candle to the interior of the Q5 which is splendid throughout.

Had the XC60 had the same interior quality as the S80/V90 it would definitely had made the shortlist for my next car.
