New E90 335i owner, advice needed

Hey everyone, I used to post and hangout here a long time ago back when I almost got my dream car (e90 335i) but instead ended up getting an e46 manual 330i with m sport package that I loved. I drove it from 30k miles to 140k until a huge deer ran out and totaled it a couple weeks ago.

I was fortunate to get enough money from the insurance company, and used some of my money I've saved up to finally get an e90. Its an 09 335i with 77k miles (automatic unfortunately).

I was wondering what you guys recommend me doing maintenance and prevention wise right after getting an used e90. It has just hit 77k miles, and as far as I know only the hpfp has been replaced with the recall/warranty. I took it to any indy mechanic that said everything looked good. But, is there anything I should be doing to it or replacing soon at this mileage? What are the first things you need to do after buying a used e90? What kind of things should I be doing regularly or in the near future in order to keep the car in tip top shape? Besides regular oil changes and checkups.

I want to mod it down the road but I'm not in a hurry, I'm looking to make sure I keep it in great shape and try and prevent and future huge issues. Thanks guys and sorry for the wall of text

Change the tranny fluid. Maybe coolant flush.

Pay attention to the Condition Based Service callouts on the dash. Not much else to say.

Preventive maintenance seems to be key with these cars. Don't start modding until all of that is done. You might want to put aside some $$$ for a water pump if it is still on the original. Mine just went out at 64k miles and seem to go right around there. Walnut blast, coils, and plugs is where I would start.

There is nothing unfortunate about a Steptronic on any BMW in 2017!

You are under the age of 30 and own a BMW that makes you very fortunate.

BMW says to change tranny fluid at 100k, should I go ahead and change it earlier anyway? But thanks, will do. I'll make sure to keep up to date in the service lights.

Yep, that's what I've read up and seen. Some 335is seem to have everything fail while others are solid. I want to do as much preventative maintenance as possible so that I don't run into problems, I love this car and want to drive it for as long as possible. Thanks for the tips, how much does a water pump repair normally go for?

Wow, this is awesome and exactly what I was looking for. You're a champ man thank a lot for this list, I'm going to knock it all out. Looks like it's going to drain the rest of my saved up money but it's well worth it. I've noticed that the MHD tune is the new deal, is it better than the JB3? Do you recommend a tune as the first mod to get? My 335 doesn't have a sport package so I was thinking of doing new wheels + suspension first, or should I go with the tune?

True that man, I'm very lucky and happy to get a ahold of a taken care of and relatively low mileage 335i. Manual or not I'm blessed, it's a dream car. But I've always driven manual and my manual E46 really made me fall in love with sticks. But I can't be too picky, next time!

ZF fluid is 60k

GM (328i) gearbox is 100k

I would definitely do a walnut blast as well.

didnt you have an e90 328i before? what happened to it? or just the e46?

enjoy your n54!

Truth! I am 25 and just picked up this car myself. However I had an Evo 8 making 700+ hp before this. Always have to stay humble and know that hard work pays off! Plus the looks you get driving these cars is great when your younger.

Hello AS335i, SERVICE HISTORY ? How about you tell us what the service history contains, and share the spec of the car, It helps respondents in narrowing down specific suggestions for you; and what kind of driving (freeway / city) / climate / you are in; mileage per year anticipated, and anything else that you think might be good to describe your kinda driving. . .tires? brand / spec / wear, RF ?

PS: autos are fine, 6 speed steptronic? Have pic to share?

and as slow335xi has stated: don't start modding until we've got the basic maintenance up to date

Do you have a good BMW Specialist / indy shop close by? try this forum for leads http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=51

#2 I would hold off changing coils until they get start going bad. They last quite a while. Maybe have 1 or 2 replacements in the garage for just in case.
#9 This is debatable. Talked to my friend (ex BMW master tech) and he advised me against. Gave the whole speech why, so I listened.

If you or anyone going to Tune MHD or install JB4 or other tune and car has over 50k and spark plugs were never changed then you should replace spark plugs and ignitions coils before add more power to car.

I am not sure how much, but you can go online and try to get an idea that how much parts will cost and talk to mechanic to get an estimate on labor.

Great info shared. I would have the shocks/Struts checked out. Start looking for a Charge Pipe to replace the OEM.

Don't forget about Vanos & Boost Solenoids. Another great preventative I did recently that made my car run 100x smoother & hit boost a lot quicker. owning a 335i is a privilege imho. It is just the freakin best. My 335i is almost 7 years old and it still runs like new. keep up with due and preventive maintenance and you will be free to mod it as much as you want without any cons. Just more fun & power!!🤘🏻

At 130km my oil filter housing gasket went, check for pooling oil right on the metal housing, id also call the dealership and give them your vin and see if any recalls have been done to the car, if not go get them done. Everyone else covered pretty much everything else.

Goodluck, and honestly every paycheck or whatever put aside 50$, because things WILL go wrong with this car and get Americas equivalent to CAA towing. 110 a year is nothing when one tow 5km away is 80-110$.

Along with MHD since its steptronic, get the Alpina Flash, you can DIY it yourself, or there are countless people that will do it for you remote for <120$ This is a night and day difference in shift speed and drive modes in the Steptronic.

If you dont mind waiting/paying more, check out the XHP flash tool, its like MHD but for the TCU, and is faster/stronger then just the alpina flash.

The pros of the alpina, is BMW programming from Alpina/Reliability, and if you DIY it, FREE.
