HELP!!! 997 GT3 or 991 Carrera S???

Hello everybody, Although I love my 335i I am looking into buying a Porsche as a third car. Ill probably end up keeping the bimmer and using it as a dailey and just drive the Porsche on the weekends or specific days but I'm completely stumped on which porsche to get. I am in-between a 2008 GT3 with 32k miles and a 2014 Carrera S with 8K miles. I am aware of the GT3 being much more desirable and possibly retaining it's value much better but with it being almost 10 years old it most definitely makes the newer Carrera something to think about! They have similar HP numbers (in the ballpark of 400-415)

The carrera might be the more logical choice, but man do i love the GT3. If it's a weekend car i'd want the cooler one (GT3).

The carrera would get my vote if you wanted a daily, since its only a weekend/occasion car, get the one that makes driving it an occasion, GT3 is special, 9 years old or not, definitely a super car in my mind. Drive both and see which one gives you the giggles!

GT3, don't get caught up in the Carrera being newer... who gives a shit when you have a GT3, every kid and his dad want one. This car will matter at the end of the day. The Carrera is just another porsche.

GT3 all day. Like others have said, if it was your daily I would get the carrera but since you are going to drive it on special days only get the special car.

GT3 all day everyday. If you want it more stealth you could do the wing delete. Check out sharkwerks instagram page (they are a porsche tuner) and they have a few pics with a black 991 GT3RS with a wing delete and it's awesome.

For a weekend only car - the GT3 is as special as it gets. Though the 991 S is ok being a daily driver.

Was just in the same boat. Gave the 335is to my wife and settled for a 997.2.

997s are the last of the 'pure' breed. 991 moved away from the Porsche roots and probably fall flat again like the 996s.

997 GT3 will be future classics...

Get a Turbo S. Why get a car that's slower on the track and slower stoplight to stoplight?

997 all day long. I own a 997.2 C2, and although I've not driven a 991, I've watched many a video review from folks who have driven both. Consensus is that the steering on the 997 is not to be beat (it is unlike anything I've experienced), and that the 991 feels a touch bigger than a 911 should (because it is). The interior of the 2008 GT3 will feel a bit dated for what you're paying, but the first time you carve up a canyon road, you'll be like, "Uh, what interior?" But you can't go wrong with either. My DD is a 2011 335i, and I relish having both.

997 was the last manual GT3 if I remember correctly. I know 991 went PDK only.

The GT3 will most likely be worth considerably more down the road as well.

Congrats OP the 911 has been my dream car since I was a boy and even though I'm nearing 40 I'm not there yet. One day though... Best of luck on your purchase.

Interesting perspective. Not to get too far off track but what do you relish about your E9X relative to your 997? I figured and perhaps b/c I've put the 911 on a pedestal for 30 years that once I went 911 other cars would seem less than or pedestrian.

GT3 for a weekend car, and its not close. You will own something that is special in a way a Carrera S never will be. If you can afford one now, buy it before you can't.

Wow, that article makes it sound incredible. It's like an E92 M3 and then some.

I've owned a 996 Targa for over a decade and recently purchased a e90 335i to replace it as an all-season daily driver. My 996 will be relegated to "nice days only".

If I had to replace my 996 today it would almost certainly be with a 997 GT3. I wouldn't move to a newer Carrera since it wouldn't be a significant upgrade in driving experience. From everything I've read the 991 has lost a bit of what makes the 911 feel so special (the steering and road feel are a huge part of that).

The 997 GT3 interior might be slightly dated, but I think it is the clear winner for a weekend-only car. It will almost certainly induce more passion than a 991 S. Although it is worth noting that the GT3 does not have any rear seats which could easily be a deal-breaker.

Actually for a weekend-only car you might want to consider the Cayman S. It doesn't have the same prestige as the 911, but it might be just as much fun for a lower price.

ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION GT3

Just think, in 3 years when you itch to sell for a new car, the GT3 will be worth $20k more. Additionally, it is the ultimate 'no substitute' driving machine that will please on more levels than the Carrera.
