2009 320D EGR Location

Does anyone know where the EGR location is on a 2009 320D Auto N47 engine?

I noticed loss of power when i drove off but it came back again. I did Carly scan and it's reporting a error on the EGR with a couple of codes as seen below.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A lot of those images reference the M47 EGR, the N47 EGR is like the one shown in this post

It's on the front of the engine and very easy to see/get to.

simple job on a n47 engine p-dawg

take the radiator top cover off, engine top cover and the egr is there on your left side front, can't miss it

I have had very similar error codes on my n57, although the car ran with no problems, it led me to change the egr actuator valve but this didn't clear the faults. Since then I have re fitted the old egr actuator and cleaned all the connections - all is well

My egr was very clean inside - just a light coating of soot only, which I found surprising on a 70k+ car

btw there are two types of egr on the n47 auto, one is vacuum operated and the other electric, also the manual cars have a bypass, the auto's don't. The pic in bishbash's post is the vacuum one

Great thank you. I have spotted it. Is it straight forward to swap out. It looks like it is just a couple of bolts that need un-doing?

assuming you have the vacuum one its just 2 torx bolts, 1 vacuum pipe and the electrical connector, under 5 mins work

there is a vertical air bypass ribbed plastic pipe there too ( left of the egr) which just needs a squeeze and twist to remove it gives you better access to the torx bolts

the torx bolts are fiddly to get at but just take your time, I did most of the turns with my fingers

may need a tap with a mallet to free it

I think the electrical version has a coolant feed too so may be a bit more fun to remove

I used electrical cleaner on the connections...I think that may have done the trick

when refitting the egr actuator just take your time and "feel" the plunger seat down nicely

btw page 56 on that document if you just want a quick look....but the whole thing is a good read !!

regards Katie

btw I wouldn't buy a replacement egr just yet p-dawg, I suspect there may be nothing wrong with yours just a "blip", I think that position sensor on the top of it just gets its knickers in a twist occasionally, and these cars do throw up these error codes seemingly at will sometimes

have a go at your own first and see if the fault vanishes after a couple of attempts

let me know how you go on

The N47 EGRs are a lot more reliable than the M47 ones. The reason is that the exhaust gasses are cooled after passing the EGR valve, whereas in the M47 they're cooled beforehand, it's this cooling of the gasses prior to passing the EGR valve that causes it to get coked up!
