Audi RS and S models

I hope this is the right place to post this but... I've had a question that has been bothering me for a while. I can't figure out what Audi's brand strategy is on the S and RS models. The RS models now compete with the M models, so what are the S models directly aimed at? The B6 S4 was aimed at the E46 M3 and now it's the RS4 that is aimed at the E92 M3... Can anyone help me understand this? Thanks, Krueger.

This is difficult....and doesn't really have an answer. A lot of times it is up to whoever is testing the cars. Sometimes they'll put the e92 coupe against the rs4 (which is a 4 door sedan). Another magazine article I read recently put the S5 up against the M3 with a Cayman S and a Vauxhall in the mix. The S models are somewhere in the middle ground between the base model and the "race" model RS. I'm pretty sure that RS stands for Rennsport (race sport). Audi usually makes one RS at a time, so when the RS4 goes away I'm not sure what will take its place against the M3. perhaps the TT-RS? Either way, it isn't a perfect science.

S-line, mainly deals more with appearance

S models, standard models with more performance/sport, mainly engine performance

RS models, the whole package (brakes, suspension, engine, interior, aero, etc...) Audi's highest performance level.

BMW will fudge it even more with the tii line up

S-line is like the Mtech, sort of....appearance only like you said.
