2013 Dinan Stage 2 limp mode

Hey all,

I had my 2013 BMW 335i (E92) ECU reflashed to the Dinan Stage 2 a couple weeks ago @ BMW Excluservice in MD (Dinan authorized). Stephane recommended I replace the spark plugs at the same time since my car was @ 44k miles so I did those. All was fine for about 200 miles (I don't drive much as I take the metro to work).

Today I started the car (absolutely freezing outside) and I received the dreaded limp mode message on the nav/gauge cluster. I didn't drive the car as I was already running late for work and decided to take an Uber to the metro. I'm in full panic mode now at work researching this topic. The car was running perfectly well yesterday - literally zero issues prior to this AM.

This seems like too much of a coincidence considering the car was running extremely well prior to the flash (and 200 miles after the flash) - I'm thinking about reverting back to stock because the small increase in power isn't worth dealing with a more problematic BMW. Any thoughts on how to go about this?

Get your money back on that. I bet the water pump died. I believe the dinan tune makes it run faster or longer than stock.

It could also be the charge pipe. I wouldn't tune these cars unless that was upgraded too.

Jb4 will blow the dinan tune out of the water.

Nah, it's a mild tune, the car should be able to handle it just fine. They should warranty their work and labor on the install, including the spark plugs. Have them read the codes, and potentially double-check the plugs to verify the gap.

I bet it's something related to the plugs, as you got both done at the same time and I agree Dinan stage 2 is a much more mild option compared to other tunes.

Corrected my post. Dinan does mess with water pump settings.

Quick update - came home and started the car. Started fine, maybe a little rough and there was minor shaking (super cold out and it has been sitting all day) from the motor then it smoothed out. Limp mode warning was still active. I turned the car off. I turned the car back on and the light came on, then went away. I let the car run for about 30-45 seconds before turning it off. Finally, I turned the car on a third time and there was no light and the engine seemed to operate fine. I drove around the area to get the oil temp up to normal and the car seemed perfectly fine with no loss in power.

...any ideas? Would AutoZone be able to pull that code even though its gone?

AutoZone can only read check engine lights. You'll need to use a BMW-specific scanner in order to read the limp mode codes.

Because Dinan pushes more boost, you should inspect the charge pipe to see if it has cracked. A metal charge pipe is highly recommended.

I did a visual check of the CP and it seems to be fine but I'll probably order the ER one soon.

Dinan Stage whatever IS limp mode. JJ, look for whatever reason you can that gets your money back, and take it in another direction.

N54/55's HATE the cold. HATE it....

The things that happen during cold starts when the outside temperature drops below 15*F, is pretty frustrating and mind boggling......

I had all kinds of issues with cold start in hot weather too on 93 gas with the dinan tune. Startup would rev up and down. Got my money back (after they replaced a bunch of parts, turned out the dinan stage 2 tune was the issue). switched to jb4 and cobb and minor rpm drop on cold start but that's on 100% e85. I blip the gas a little on startup and then all is well. No issues on 93 though.

Sounds like your car has a problem. Mine starts up great at -20*F. If I have E30 in it gets more picky.

For those running e85 i'd recommending turning the car on first (no brake) then hold the brake and turn the engine on. This should start the LPFP up first then pressure the line more. It seems to start better when I do that

Is that the loud "whirr" noise you can hear after opening or getting near the car? I'll be drying my car and occasionally hear that noise when I accidentally hit the lock/unlock button or touch the door handle (CA).
