Balancing weights on brand new wheels

I'm trying not to let it bother me cos I'm well chuffed with the new car, but I'm a bit surprised at how many balancing weights are on the wheels.

The OSF has got three and the OSR has got six, which are quite noticeable.

Just wondered if that's normal as I don't remember it on any of my other cars.

Since they are no longer made of lead. They do look plentiful.

I think TPMS Valves have also increased the number of weights required.

I hadn't realised that - makes sense, I guess.

It's better, on balance, to have them rather than not have them. My set of BMW-purchased winter wheels were put on without any - I had to take them back to the dealer to get them properly balanced.

Makes sense, but on the OSR, if the valve is at 6 o'clock, the weights are from about 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock

Very good! Must admit they feel fine, but it spoils the lines a bit.

I'm still trying to find somewhere to buy the OE wheel weights. Really dislike the normal aftermarket weights when the inevitabe tyre change happens.

It's a right bitch when you have black wheels and a touch of OCD.

My tyre guy thinks I'm nuts for bringing a tin of spray paint with me.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_od...ights&_sacat=0

or direct from dealer if you feel the need

Personally, I've got a box of Hofmann weights from ebay waiting for when I get new tyres.

Hofmann are what BMW use and recommended to me by the only tyre place I trust.

Do your weights look worse than this?

I'm afraid so. That was when they went on, the weights are now rusty so look even worse. Not OEM obviously.

Thankfully, they will be coming off with the tyres on Thursday when the summers go back on. I have a box of powder coated weights for my tyre fitter when he visits this time.

I hope they look better.

Erm. Right. Well from what I can see the weights are the least of your problems. Is it just me?

The imbalance of your tyre will also affect the position of the weights, not just the tyre valve.

Tyres have heavy and low spots on that need to be balanced out - this is the coloured dots on the tyres when they are new.

I had my wheels balanced recently and according to my tyre fitter the wheels were pretty badly balanced from the dealer. One was actually better without the dealer's wheel weights than with! If you're worried about the number of wheel weights I'd get them balanced by someone you trust.
