Light Steering

I've searched this topic and it seems to garner various responses from alignment, tire pressure, suspension tightening.

I have a 2013 335is, which is now my 4th "E-gen" bmw and probably the 10th one I've driven. I've driven every variation (328i/330i/335i/, I/XI, ZSP/nonZSP, MT/AT). Mine is nowhere near as heavy as any of these.

Since I bought a used car driven in NY, I expected a beaten suspension so I had two well known NJ shops check it out. Both noted the car looked brand new underneath. I've had 3 alignments, TRW M3 control arms put in, new tires mounted, Koni dampers, sway bars, whiteline subframe inserts, you name it.

The chassis is night and day but the steering is just way light and doesn't feel solid at high speeds. My 06 330i with 120k on the clock, stock parts felt heavier.

What could it be? Lower steering shaft? i checked the torx bolt on that also.

That's the weird thing. It will heavy when i first start driving in the current winterish weather. Warmed up and highway cruising, soft.

I would say though, at 140k a lot of the components are worn and may need re-tightening.

Do you have a print out of your alignment? Too much toe out and not enough caster will give the sensation of a light or wandering steering feel.

Active steering only feels light at low speeds. At freeway speeds, it tightens up and feels heavier than non-as systems.

I have to dig around, again this is one of those areas I think isn't a major factor since I've driven out of spec 335i's that just felt stable. Would this have anything to do with the steering rack itself, or lower shaft? I may just replace them so I can sleep at night.

Ugh, no more used cars.

I have electric steering (Euro). I can tell you that when I fitted the M3 OEM strut brace (substituted for the standard MSport brace) the steering weighted up considerably. If that helps...

Interesting. I remember the stabilizer bar (Alu-Kreuz) for my s4 made a huge difference in steering. I may go this route. Thanks!

If anything is loose in the steering rack or suspension I think your steering would feel off/imprecise.
Probably just alignment.
