Mobile phone text messages on the cars screen?

Is this supposed to work? Having your mobile phones text messages shown on the car screen? I have the phones contact list on the screen, I have the latest called numbers on the screen. But haven't found out how to get the text messages on the cars screen. Maybe it's not supposed to work?

Press the "COM" button above the nav wheel/below media and scroll to text messages. It will only show recent/unread text messages. If that's not there, check your mobile office settings and that it includes text messages.

Thx but... I don't have a "com" button. Is that a MY2017 thing possibly? Mine's a MY2016

I thought that was only a feature if you have apple car play.

Maybe check your manual?

Does your phone support Bluetooth MAP (message access protocol)? That's what the car uses to pull down messages from your phone.

Ah! I wonder how I find that out. It's an Android phone. Can't find any setting for MAP when looking at bluetooth settings in it. I had an Audi earlier and there text messages worked (with the same phone)

I feel a bit lost and stupid...

When the iDrive connects to the Android phone, you may have to confirm permission to read messages from your phone. If you don't do that, it will never work until you first delete the phone from iDrive and re-add it. iDrive should show what features it negotiated with the phone, each feature has a checkbox. And that list should include messaging.

Thx for the feedback! I've deleted and re-added the phone but there is no question about messaging or similar.

As you can see there is only a phone icon and a music icon, seems I'm out of luck.

It appears that your phone lacks MAP support, which is part of the OS. It is probable that a MAP-enabled, 3rd party version of Android is available for your phone model if you're willing to upgrade its OS.

OnePlus One stock Bluetooth profiles w/ no mention of MAP:
HSP [headset]
HFP [hands-free]
A2DP [stereo audio]
AVRCP [media control]
DUN [network sharing]
HID [peripherals]
OPP / FTP [file transfer]

Understood. I've had BMW SMS problems with past Android phones and was able to fix them that way. Was also intending to point out to others (who may be unaware) that a new phone isn't always the only solution.

With the Pixel, SMS send and receive now works and contact photos are in phone book. Also long-press voice control makes Android Auto practical.

Currently want BMW's Miracast screencasting to work on the Pixel. This feature used to work with Nexus/Google phones but was disabled in Google's phones as of Android 6 and removed entirely in 7.
