Caveat Emptor..."Big Brother" BMW is Watching

Just got a warning today from my SA that BMW is really cracking down hard on tuned 335i's (and 535's, 135i's, X6's, etc.), and supposedly, they really can see anomalies (that point to an obvious aftermarket piggyback tune) when checking the DME (which the service techs are now supposed to do every time your car goes in for service; even for routine maintenance). This is obviously bad news for all of us, even those of us who have enjoyed the luxury of not worrying about bringing our cars in for non-engine related service issues to our so-called "mod friendly" dealers.

Apparently, BMWNA is now pressuring dealers to find tuned BMWs, so they can void warranties. I wouldn't have posted this if I thought is was b.s., but I know my SA wouldn't lie about this; he warned me for a reason and mentioned that anyone with a tuned BMW should remove any such tuning products before coming in for service, even if its routine maintenance. This sucks!

Does anyone have any corroborating info on this?

btw -- all the more reason to need PNP PROcede v3...for easy removal!!!!

I don't have any supporting information to back this up, but I wouldn't doubt it. Its not like we didn't see this coming, BMW is not a human-less corporation...they have people that know this stuff too. Thanks for sharing the information!

What about those with a Dinan flash? It obviously can't be removed prior to service.

What actuator fix? What are you referring to?

Service techs are supposed to visibily check the DMEs for signs of installation or check the purported "anomalies" that are logged in the DME?

I am not too worried about since I would remove all mods before going in. Plus, another member here had his fuel pump replaced after running JB2HHR and the service tech told him that his DME had no faults whatsoever....

Just a little FYI

I've always wondered something else. You KNOW BMW has the ability to talk to your car wireless, who's to say they don't make use of that :/

My buddy removed his piggyback last week after being warned by his SA. His car was in for a 15k oil change without the piggyback. I confirmed this with my SA, but I did not post this info because the expected thrashing I would have endured. So for sflgator to post this (given his pro-piggy history), it's a real concern.

No need to remove it, Dinan is covered by Dinan/BMW.

I received an unsolicited call from a BMW tech advising me of the same issue approximately 2 weeks ago. The ones with the serious issues here are the Dinan customers. It will be interesting to see how BMW handles them.
