Is BMW oil fully synthetic???

I am thinking about changing my oil after break-in and I have a question about BMW oil. Is it a full synthetic or is it one of those halfass synthetics? I have heard that the castrol that BMW uses is not fully synthetic like Mobil 1 is. If I do my own oil change what kind of oil do you all suggest? Sorry about this question but I have heard so many conflicting statements that I don't know what is true anymore. Thanks.

Use what the dealer uses. Better yet, have the dealer change it, since you've already paid for it. Problem solved.

The BMW branded oil is a full synthetic presently supplied by Castrol. Generally speaking it is less expensive than Mobil 1 in the same grade/weight, at least in the US. Both are excellent products.

Unless you are in Germany then the free maintenance isnt included. Then they practically rape you if you have them use their oil so you are forced to buy your own oil. Since I had to go that route I bought Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0w-40... "If I have to provide the oil its gonna be the good stuff."

Yeah, good point. You know we Americans think we're the only people on the planet! Sorry for the blanket statement.

Synthetic oil in Germany can cost around 20-25 euros per litre. On base we have Mobile1, Castrol and Royal Blue among others. These cost between 6-10 dollars per litre.

I currenly have an 02 X5 3.0 and I usually do two oil changes per year. One the dearler does for free and the other I do myself six months later. I find that if I only do it once a year, I have to add 2 quarts a few months before the next change. BMW says that is normal but I question that.http://www.e90post.com/forums/newrep...eply&p=183041#
BS Hopfuly the newer engine doesn't have that same problem.

Also, if you have a BMWCCA membership you get 20% off of parts at the dearler. So it usually cost less to buy the oil from your dealer than it would from like Walmart or an auto store. Plus you are using the same oil they use so you can't go wrong with which one to buy.

They are ripping you off! My friend picked me my Mobil 1 synthetic from Ramstein for $4.60/quart roughly same as in the states. Italians rip u off... I can get oil coupons on base that makes synthetic $10 and its cheap synthetic!

Exactly, I will never buy oil on the economy only on base.
