Can I turn the screen OFF?

I notice a couple of people have said if they don't have NAV turned on, they turn the screen off. That's me, too. Trouble is, the screen won't stay off.

After driving around in the city for a few days, I finally take the freeway. While in the city, I don't have lane departure warning turned on, because it does nothing and the two dashed lines on the instrument cluster are a distraction. So as I enter the freeway, I turn it on. As I'm merging at about 90 km/hr, I notice that the screen has turned on and is saying something. That's the worst time for the screen to distract me. It isn't even telling me anything important. Why is it doing this? So I have to stab the turn screen off button I have programmed.

Then I do something simple with the radio. I can see the new station on the heads-up display, but again the screen turns on. Don't do that! It leads to distracted driving.

Is there any way I can set the screen to be off means OFF? (Except for vital notifications, of course.)

On a related note, when I start the engine, why does it distract me EVERY TIME with a notice that I shouldn't be distracted by the screen and a confirmation that I am me? I just want to start the engine and drive off!

Some coding will remove the disclaimers. I removed all that crap.

I leave my screen on Nav all the time. Since it's always there it isn't distracting, and if something arises where I need it, like road construction, detours and the like, it's already running.

First world problem. Have never been distracted by the screen & don't really understand why anyone would be.

Some people also used "distraction" as a reason they did not get a HUD. Again I am having a hard time understanding how these things can be a distraction to anyone.

Agree with you, especially about HUD. I cannot imagine being without HUD, now that I have it.

you can assign "display off" to a shortcut button on the stereo, so 1 button then screen is off ... that's how I setup mine

sounds like OP already has this done but is frustrated that it keeps turning back on when he presses a button for some other function. OP is looking for a method where it will turn off until he turns it back on again.

Just turn your screen brightness ALL THE WAY DOWN. That way it's not distracting but you can look at it if you try hard enough.

Very entertaining replies, I must say. I especially like the idea of covering the screen with an index card. Right up there with the suggestion I read elsewhere of putting tape over the rear cameras.

I am edging closer to doing a little recoding.

HUD has not been a distraction for me, because it's a very restrained display. It shows just what is necessary and nothing more. I love it!

Yes, button #1 is set to turn screen off. Every day, I have to hit it two or three times.
