Bummed- to say the least-
Trash truck hit my car while I was moving cars around in my garage....needless to say I was bummed. Dealer says no damage aside from dented panels and scraped wheel .

Ouch! I'd be bummed as well. That driver needs to look where he is going.
Bright side is that it can be fixed and you still have one of the coolest cars on the planet.

Was moving cars around in garage and had to take out the 1M to do so. I have space comfortable enough for three cars but a garage door only wide enough for two....left car on side of street and truck while backing in to collect trash ---as this is a dead end street...and boom! Really unfortunate as there is almost no traffic on street as there are only two houses after mine....go figure.

His mistake.....he had no idea why I was 1) shocked....at a loss for words2) about to reach for the sledge hammer and then 3) pissed.
Company insurance will cover, but I have taken such care of this car and for this to happen.. He really had no clue- |

Bummer indeed, yet your car and your ownership pride are in excellent shape for a sixth stage of grief: full recovery.

Fortunately, the garbage trucks come every Wednesday between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., like clockwork, unless Monday is a Holiday (like this week!), when they can come anytime. Now I will be careful not to park any car on the street this coming week, after Wednesday, that is! |

Sometimes I think it governs my life as well. My 1M had been in my posession for 3 months when this happened: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ghlight=garage I eventually figured out that it was a combination of two new technologies. Comfort access meant I didn't notice I had forgotten the key until I tried to start the car. Out of habit, I had put the car into neutral without even thinking about it. Then, the hill start assist made sure that the car did not start to roll immediately, waiting a few seconds until I was far enough away not to notice. Door shell was replaced. Paint job is perfect. All is well.

I had a similar event just a few weeks into ownership--the car is so much wider than the MK2 Mini I drove for five years.
You'll be fixed up in no time but I feel your pain brother. Stay strong. |

I autocrossed my first 1M a few times took it to 150 mph and took some spirited drives on desolate mountain roads and drove it from Toronto to San Diego at the same time hated to take it out when it rains in SoCal and I drive around looking for a good spot where my car won't get dinged. I had a girl tell me once she found it odd that I was scared to drive it in the rain but did these other things. I thought for a minute and asked her: have you ever seen Legends of the Fall? I figured she probably did since almost every girl wants Tristen. She said enthusiastically, yes! I love that movie! Then I said do you remember how Tristan died? Yes, fighting a grizzly bear with his bare hands. Exactly. In the movie they say he died a "good death."
So I continued, if I damaged my car autocrossoing or in the autobahn or a cross country drive I would be bummed but my car would've died a "good death." Getting rear ended by an old lady on the way to work or as my son did with my first BMW, which was drop his bike on the hood of my car, is not a good a "good death". Getting hit by a trash truck while moving cars is a terrible way to go!!! So we all feel your pain!! And as we offer positive thoughts that it will be fine once fixed we still acknowledge that this is a terrible death. It's as if Tristen died choking on a piece of beef jerky while sharpening his knife to slay the bad guys. : ) |

Of course, I don't know, but:
My understanding is that if a body panel is easily replaced, they get a new one. if it is not, then a competent body shop will pound out the defect to be as close to perfect as they can (with old fashioned body work), and then they will use filler, or "bondo," (actually a brand name) to fill in the small areas that can't be made perfect. Once the panel is prepared and resprayed, you won't see what is filler and what is metal. The older that our cars get, the more inevitable will be the odd encounters with immovable and moving objects, that require body work. In a perfect world, we would all own cars that have never been damaged in any way, have perfect maintenance histories, and very low mileage. In the real world in which we live, perfection is rarely achieved, and or maintained. |
