So I took my 1M out of storage today
Have not driven it since October? Maybe November. Have had the M2 since January.
Hmmmm, random thoughts My GOD I hate the rev matching in the M2. It was the first thing I noticed in the 1M - the lack thereof and I loved NOT having it. The M2 seems better planted. Tires were spinning in the 1M like crazy and I wasn't really getting on it (they were 5lbs down on pressure). Love the single push and hold to shut the car off on the 1M Ride seems much less... firm? taut? in the 1M. I used to think it had a firm ride until the M2 came along. Missed the sound of the M2 Noticed the lack of sunroof in the 1M right away. I never notice that in the M2 - no clue why. I can't believe how much better the 1M steering is vs. the M2. It just does not compare. Anyway, I love my M2 as my DD and I'm just not sure I can justify having both cars, and as much as it pains me, I think I have to let the 1M go.

I'd keep the 1M...but I'm biased.
I'm on two lists for an M2 CS. I hope it doesn't disappoint. |

LOVE YOUR COMMENTS HERE. All I hear is DCT people telling me what a Luddite I am for not wanting to give up FEELING the transmission and steering work. When I need to get to work faster I have an automatic EPS car as a daily driver ... and when I get back in my 1M and the steering wheel is actually ALIVE and moving in response to the road.. it's momentarily strange ! And then I hunker down in my seat like an old favorite chair and grab the steering wheel and the shifter and revel in the connection to the car from there! The M2 Not having auto rev match user defeatable in all modes is Ridonkulous. Interesting the M2 has a stiffer/firmer ride... as with any generational improvement ... the M2 definitely is even MORE planted .. and the 1M actually has a ton of grip... but gets snappy at the limit. .. I'm going to presume you have Michelin supersports on the 1M? If you have original PS2.... The manual gearbox is so awesome. I'm sure that BMW EPS will continue to improve but just like you... I agree it's... "sorry Charlie " the 1M is a million times better. If you need a daily driver I am sure the M2 is better for that task... and they really aren't that far apart ... i love the fact that I do have my 1M as a weekend car .. so if you've got a better weekend car or you have to move the 1M for the DD ... i grok... but if you ask me .. it's a tough call but the one to keep is the 1M... |

It's because your passive aggressive comments when you talk about it, and talking down to people with an "automatic" M2. I am glad you like your MT in your vehicle, I'm happy for you. I think if you keep your comments about the positive aspects of the MT, and not be so negative about the DCT people wouldn't be calling you a Luddite, just passionate about the driving experience of a MT.

I don't envy your choice, but it's a nice choice to have. I previously didn't care for the looks of the 1M, but since being on this forum and watching & reading more about it, I've warmed up to it now. If I had got one at the time they came out, it would probably be hard for me to part with also.
I'm a poser compared to a lot of you, having never learned to rev/match and only having one HPDE under my belt. The auto rev-matching on the track is really nice to have for a novice and I like it on my M235i. Steering feel is something else I don't know much about, and it would be nice to have my old E36 M3 to compare. |

I need to go drive both cars back to back - minor issue however is that they are both blocked in by the wife's mini and I'm afraid to wake her up and ask where the key is.

Her car cock- blocking yours in ? My EX-wife used to do that... . See my public service announcement in the 1M forums about the OEM tires under the Michelin 4s thread. You got a $50k car and it's got 6 year old shoes .. A new Ford Focus would feel more planted. Give your 1M $1200 worth of love and at the least buy whatever is on the M2 ( continentals or the supersports ) so it's at least a fair comparison. The 1M can't keep up with 6 years of design technology.. but you sure can keep the tire tech up to date ! |

The 1M borrowed from the E92 M and while I love my E92 it's 2008 tech. I don't presume to compare it to the F80 because there is no comparison, the F80 is better by most every objective measure. Subjectively I prefer the E92 for a variety of reasons but I know which is the better car I'm not delusional. I view 1M and M2 comparisons similarly. Six or seven years in the automotive industry may as well be a light year. Enjoy your 1M; for what it is.

What I have to say about the firm ride in the M2/M3/M4/M5/M6 is that these cars are much stiffer than previously. But they all share a subframe that is bolted directly into the car compared to previous years. Which causes a harsher ride quality/ vibrations no matter what. How's does the steering compare between the two... which is lighter?

Came from a 1M and in my opinion the M2 is a superior car. Many reasons.
The 1M was a standard 1 series to which BMW applied some M magic. The M2 is an M car from the beginning. There is no way to completely replicate an M car especially in the area of handling and rigidity. One can squeeze the HP form a 1 and even upgrade suspension parts. There is no way to make the car stiffer. Hence one of the reasons M cars handle better and feel so much tighter. The 1M is a nice car. But in the end it is not a proper M car. This is simply my opinion. YMMV. |

Isn't the M2 a 235/240 with some M magic applied?

You can code out the second push if you want, on the M2. I happen to like shutting down the engine and then listening to the end of a good tune before I close down completely. To each his own...

You just have to remember when switching to older model vehicle that a second push will restart. I kinda wish the M2 had a key slot like our X1. The fobs seem to be getting larger each year and I don't have a purse. Hate keeping it my pocket so it ends up in the cup holder. My pattern on the X1 is to either long push for full shut down, or short push....finish my business, tunes etc....then push in the key fob and exit accordingly using comfort access to complete lock down.

Same thing in the 1M...it works just like the M2. The only difference is if you HOLD the start/stop in the 1M (and older BMWs and Minis), it completely shuts down. Why they removed this (and why the heck they moved the volume control to the RIGHT side of the steering wheel) is a mystery (ok, I know why they moved the volume control - cause the cruise control functions went from a stalk to the steering wheel ).
