ADVICE NEEDED: High pitch whistle from engine bay

My e92 328 has been making a high pitch whistle from the engine bay accompanied by a rough idle. It does it randomly and also goes away randomly. The only codes I have are vanos related so I thought maybe that was the problem. I took my car to BMW and they couldn't reproduce the whistle but told me they believed it was a vacuum caused by a faulty valve cover and not vanos related at all. The vanos codes were linked to "bad solenoids" they said. The car has been running fine the past 2 days with no whistle or rough idle and today I cleaned my solenoids to see if that would get rid of the codes and after putting them back in, the car is idling like crap and whistling its a** off every time I start it. Why would this happen if it is not vanos related? Any advice?

Vacuum leak.

Check hoses or even valve cover (it tends to crack)

BMW has confirmed that the cause of my problems is a bad ccv which means my whole valve cover has to be replaced. BMW wanted $1300 to do it so instead, its at a local shop being looked at

3-4 hours and $3-400 if you do it yourself.

If quoted more than $500-$600 I'll do it myself

Or why not just replace the membrane?
