Help Identify: Vent Box or something

07 328xi sedan : N52 engine : 44k miles

Located under the alternator and there is a black hose going into it. It looks like a vent hose or something The hose that clips to the alternator goes down into it. Can someone help? Is this a gas tank vent hose or something?

This is the only location where there is oil residue and i am trying to figure out if it is normal or not. I noticed it yesterday when checking out the engine.

Looks like a Breather whose. Should go from the back of the engine into your intake manifold. Maybe a seal on the coupling is worn thus slow leak. How's your idle?

Yeah, it goes from the back right of the engine, to a clip on the top of the alternator then to this box thing at the lower part of the front engine bay (under alternator).

Its just the lower portion that has oil residue.

My idle is perfect; however, i had a CEL come on last week P1358 or P135B then 1 day later it went away. Carmax said it was my Vanos solenoids. So, they are replacing those as we speak for free.

I am not sure what to think, a CEL for Knock Sensor when the car has been running perfect for 1200 miles. Then they tell me its a Vanos issue.

Hard to tell from picture but I think it is the vacuum line and the thing under alternator is the vacuum pump. If you follow the vacuum pump line it will eventually end up at your brake booster.

I am pretty sure its my oil filter housing leaking onto it.

Is ECS tuning a good place to buy parts or FCP Euro?

I am glad its an easy fix.

They are both good. FCP Euro does lifetime replacements though. Even on gaskets... and they price match.
