A/C always on when starting the car

So i've noticed in my gf 328, and now my 335 which i recently purchased, every time i turn on the car the A/C is on.

Is there a way to turn that off? sorry if its a silly question

*Edit* Apparently if I shut my car off with the A/C off it turns on with it off.

Mine stays off, maybe it's a new thing with the LCI, like the auto start stop setting it uses the last setting.

Yep, you can code it off. The Bimmercode app has this option. You just need the OBD WiFi adapter and the app and you can change that setting. Did this on mine, it is annoying when it comes on every time the vehicle is started.

On my 2006 E90 330i I don't run my system on automatic. I keep it in manual control all of the time and my A/C stays off unless I turn it on.

I had an 06 330 and didn't use auto air and my ac was always on when I started my car

Hm, I'm not sure my F30 LCI puts the A/C on automatically on car start. It may do that if the climate control is set to auto. If I'm running the A/C, I take it off auto, disable the A/C, and let the ventilation run for ~30 seconds or so to clear out the vents before I shut the car off. I don't remember the A/C being on when I restart the car if I do that. My 2011 E92 behaved the same way.

Yes, I've always turned off the AC before shutting off the car and it is off when I turn it on. It's only on at startup if I turn on the venting via the app.

Here to back up OP. Even though the AC button light is off upon starting the car the AC is ON for the first few minutes. Again I state that the air is clearly conditioned but the AC button light is off.

There's 'on', and there's 'on'. My AC indicator light comes on every time I start the car, but when the temperature in the car is lower than the setting it's very much not 'on'. When I'm getting heat out of my vents the light may say that the AC is 'on', but that warm air says otherwise, so I don't worry all that much about the light.

Can't imaging what would be different between our cars. btw, I did the same with my 2004 ZHP and my 2000 328i. I always ran my climate system on manual and my A/C never came on unless I turned it on.

I haven't owned an F3x or any other of the series over the last several years, but whenever I attend a BMW driving event, which is as often as they come to Chicagoland, and that's often, I have spent time checking on this question because it comes up so regularly. I have never had trouble taking a system completely out of automatic, turning off the a/c and then having it stay off when the car is restarted. I don't know what I'm doing differently than other people, but that has been my experience. I have yet to find a BMW that I cannot get to keep off the a/c when the system is completely in manual mode.

Just because you're getting warm air does not mean the compressor is not running. If you leave your system in auto and you leave your a/c button so that the little green light is lit, the odds are that even in the winter when your car is set to warm air the compressor is still running. That's the way the system is designed to operate when left in automatic mode.

As a side note, there are a lot of people who run their conditioning systems in recirculate during the winter, because they don't understand how a car's heating system works. Those are the people who complain that their windows get fogged up during the winter. Without fresh air being pulled into the car the windows will fog. Those are also the people who end up "running" their a/c in the winter, because running the compressor dehumidifies the air and eliminates the window fogging. These folks are why auto a/c systems are designed to run the compressor continuously in both hot and cold weather.

In my 2008 335 the A/C light or whatever you want to call it was never on when starting the car. Also in my last car 2015 GTI the same, the A/C would never start ON unless i left it ON when turn off the car.

i think the the way the bmw does it or at least my case, is pretty strange, i always have to turn it off when turning on the car.

lets say if my a/c is off, turn off car, turn car back in, the a/c light will be on along with air coming from the vents. but i will give that app a try see if it works.

Do you take your system completely out of automatic mode? That is, do you turn the fan completely off? Do you set it so you manually control at what level the air blows, windshield, face, or feet?

I've always been advised by BMW to keep the AC on at all times to avoid moisture build up, and I've been told it's better for the system.

To be honest, I don't ever remember turning it off. Why would you want to may I ask?

I'd say the odds are that it isn't. I have faith enough in BMW engineers that they wouldn't have the compressor running when the thermostat and/or humidistat aren't telling it to. Even the window AC units in my house are that smart.

The app, if IIRC, is around $26 or so. If you go to their web site, they have a link to the WiFi adapter on Amazon that you need which is around the same...$25, $26. All together it’s less than $60. There’s other things you can do with it as well....daytime running lights on tail lights, M Performance Logo on dash, auto fold mirrors if you have comfort access, etc.

It needs to run the compressor to dehumidify and if you select a temperature below the maximum heat, it will need to cool the warm air to that temperature by using the compressor so it's a comfortable 75 degrees and not 80+. The heater core really only has one setting and is determined by the coolant temperature.

Crap, just coded a bunch of things in mine and didn't realize I could have coded this as well. Good to know. I thought I was the only one bothered by this.
