E Model Codes ?

Why is the sedan an E90, the wagon E91, and coupe E92? In all of the other 3ers E21, E36, E46, I thought all syles (sedan, wagon, coupes, and convertibles) were grouped into one E code. Why the change?

2011 BMW M3  [9.00]
2008 BMW 335i  [0.00]
2006 BMW 330i  [0.00]

that is a good question. i didn't even realize that E46 or E36 were all coded the same for coupes, convertibles or wagons. hmm...

maybe with new people working on E90s new naming conventions came in place with them. it kind of makes sense how it is now though, you can easily tell which one is which just by the E code.

Don't know, but I think it's a real slick convention to categorize models this way.

the "E" codes are really the chassis code. i believe the some what recent change of bmw using different numbers for different models (sedan, coupe, touring) was for easier identification.

for the e36 model, it can actually be broken down even further...
e36/2: coupe
e36/3: compact (ti)
e36/4: sedan
e36/5: touring
e36/7: z3/m-roadster
e36/8: z3/m-coupe

It helps to distinguish the cars easier for parts

The new designations started with the current 7 Series, so they have been in use a while

I believe that this time around the chassis on the original sedan has been modified sufficiently enough to warrant a completely different engineering code to be used on the sibling models, whereas in the past they were not modified as much.

I read somewhere that "F" codes are coming beginning with the next 7-Series.

BMW to drop E designations according to the European Magazine, CAR. This will be started with the new 2008 7er.
