How could you guys be angry at them? They're proving that any speed 55 mph and below is so stupid on a busy highway.

With any luck, they sent this video to road planners, etc, who decide on speed limits on us highways.

I think the sunday drive is a thing of the past...

I used to drive that highway in Atlanta (I-285) and I can attest that it is a racetrack. Its aThe farthest lane to the right is usually moving at about 75mph. On average people are driving about 85mph.

I have personally hit 115mph on that highway (and I was NOT the fastest car on the road).

I once got a speeding ticket while driving with the flow of traffic in Atlanta about 12 years ago (76mph in a 55mph zone). I have to agree that these highway speed limits are ridiculously low.

Well maybe it has to do with an 'anchoring' phenomenon. Post 55 and people start to feel guilty at 70. Post 70 and people get anxious at 85...

Anyway, if NHTSA studies demonstrate that the posting of 55 mph results in fewer highway deaths than 75 mph, even if everyone is actually going 65, it's still beneficial....and there's better gas mileage overall (didn't 55 come during oil 'crisis' in 70's?). And then anytime the local police need some bucks, they have a whole road full of speeders.

I'm sure this forum is strongly represented by 'no limit' proponents, but one has to keep a couple of things in mind....
1. Not everyone has a BMW (I used to drive a Ford Escort a lifetime ago, and while it might attain 75 going downhill with a tailwind, if I had to swerve at that speed you might as well get a bodybag)
2. Not all highways are beautifully banked and free of hazards. As I'm sure you noticed in PA, just between road construction, potholes and deer carcasses, things get pretty ugly fast.

Cars are not built to go 55 anymore. Its ridiculous. These limits keep porky the copper full of donuts and big a feeling of importance whenever he stops a tax paying citizen going 80.

Drive on the autobahn if you think no speed limits are dangerous. I drove it and it was amazing. Felt safer going 140 mph there than 80 on I-5.

The solution is to keep idiots off the road with difficult driving tests. Not the lame driving tests that you can pass even if you don't speak english.

The point is not that they weren't breaking the speed limit. The point is that they were intentionally forming a barrier to block traffic. Courtesy transcends obeying the law to a "T." Remember "slower traffic keep right."

Althrough I wouldn't like it if I was caught in that, they do have a good point that speed limits (on the highway) are stupid.

Speed doesn't kill- the DIFFERENCE in speed does.

Someone in Ontario tried that years ago- he got a speeding ticket, so he and a friend went back out on the same stretch and did the legal maximum 100km/h which caused HUGE backups, so he got another ticket for impeding the flow of traffic or something. So really, what it proves is traffic speed laws are a cash grab and that's it.

I think it's a great video. Yes, the guy was ticked that he got a ticket while going 80. His point was that he was only going 5mph faster than everyone else but the "law" gave him a ticket for driving at 25mph faster than the posted limit. By that logic, everyone on the highway that day should've gotten a 20mph over the speed limit ticket.

They could've conducted their little experiment while going 65, but that would be breaking the law.

While I disagree with the above statement because my owner's manual states clearly that my BMW cannot repeal the laws of physics, it must be admitted that Autobahn death tolls have been converging with USA hwy death tolls per 100 million miles...and may even be passed by USA tolls since the 55->65 mph change took place. I can only attribute the safety of German and Austrian highways to spiritual forces. See below on how Druids are being utilized for highway safety.

Too carry on the speed on highways themes. I live in North Carolina. I went to Wrightsville Beach from the triad area. The road you take is I-40 east. When you travel throught the Raleigh area, there are loads of cops. As soon as we were past it, I didn't see one cop between Raleigh and the Atlantic Ocean. There are some long straight stretches of road

. We were doing 85 (parents in car, so I couldn't go faster

), the great thing is that they have the steel safety cables between the two directions of traffic, so cops coming the opposite way can't do anything.

My officemate and I watched this at work and we were laughing our asses off. He is actually from Georgia and he's driven on this highway before. He told me that in Atlanta you just need to drive right under 80 and you shouldn't get any tickets. Regardless of the posted limit.

Obviously I'd hate to be stuck behind these fools but I think they make a good point. Its obvious that 55 is too low. I think 65 is appropriate for a posted limit in the city.
