Gas stations

Hello everyone. I have had my 2017 32i for almost a year now. In this year, I have tested out multiple gas stations. I got ~370 with Chevron, ~420 with QT, and -490 with BP. In the manual, it says that Shell is recommended. I started going to BP thinking that it was Shell lol. I then realized after the 2nd visit. I don't really want to try Shell because I'm tired of constantly switching gas stations. I read somewhere that we should be consistent with what we put in the tank. So, can someone tell me about their experience with Shell? How does it compare with the gas stations I mentioned above? Btw, I live in Georgia, and we only have 88, 89, and 93. This is at least how it is in the part of Georgia I'm from. I fill up with 93. Any help is appreciated!

First off stick with 93, IMO both Shell and BP are good so I'd pick whichever is most convenient and then stick with them. My Dealer not only recommended BP but told me the specific station they use, I live a mile from the Dealer and the station is halfway between us so that's where I fuel.

Okay great! Thanks for the information! I guess I'll stick with BP then

Hmm, does it really matter which station the gas is from? I usually find any station the serves up 91 or higher and put that in.

I just use any name-brand gas station that's convenient when I'm low. Chances are it's all coming from the same refinery, they're just adding their own cleanser package.

The only stations I'm leery of on road trips are the little-used out of the way places that don't get much traffic. With those you don't know how old the gas is.

Does anyone have any positive or negative factual info on the "Top Tier" gas licensing? Just a stamp of approval that the manufacturers can buy into, or a real advantage? They claim other brands use "inferior additives" that can build up deposits. I use Exxon premium almost all the time due to convenience and the fact it is listed as Top Tier. Lately they have also been lower priced than a regional independent.

In the BMW manual, I believe it says to use Top Tier gas stations. I don't know the science behind it besides what you said in your post. The way I judge gas stations is by seeing the amount of miles I can go on a single tank of its gas. It is a stamp of approval. Years ago, car companies gathered together with gas stations because the car companies wanted better fuel for their cars.

I use Shell quite a bit. I also use VP Racing stations when I travel down there for work.

I have a 15 335i and a 01 330Ci. They both run great on them.

AAA recommends only using gasoline from top tier sellers. That should not be a problem as there are lots of top tier gas stations.

Out here, we only have 87/89/91...no 93. So I limit myself to top tier (usually Shell or Costco) and 91 octane.

Yup. I'm lucky.

I'm an instructor for Skip Barber Racing School. I usually worked at Road Atlanta. We now work at Atlanta Motorsports Park. I haven't been there yet but I hear it's pretty awesome.

I usually drive my E46 down there when the weather is decent. Definitely a blast driving through the mountains and back roads.

Although the F30 is fun. More comfortable and a six speed manual.

When I had my Range Rover, the one place they told me not to get gas was from Costco. Again, she could have just said that because she wanted to have an answer to my question, but I thought I'd pass that along.

I transport exotics...

Among other things that I do, and so I often talk to the tanker truck guys delivering fuel. They said in the DC area all the gas is coming from the same pipes, the only difference in companies is the additives, that is it.

That being said, I use Shell or Exxon/Mobil 93 only in all my cars, and in the Ford F-250 I use alternative tanks of 87 and then every now and then a tank of 93 octane.

So far no problems...

I like to mix things up.. 1 month Shell 91, 1 month Chevron 91, and 1 month Costco 91 and repeat. (there is no 93 here). I only use top tier gas and cycle between gas stations because....fck, I don't even know why.

Using Top Tier Fuels is probably the easiest method of attempting to ensure your fuel is adequate and minimizing engine related problems due to fuel quality.

Below is a brief article from 2016 from Consumer Reports for a "Cliff Note's" education on what is Top Tier:

http://www.consumerreports.org/car-m...h-extra-price/

(Note: Costco is listed as a Top Tier fuel.

Additionally, below is a 2016 AAA article on Top Tier fuels:

We are a 93 premium state & I run name brand + Costco. Local stations are Shell, BP & Exxon. Fill or top off at Costco when I get a "Honey Do" to make a shopping list run.
