06 330xi Need advice for exhaust mods.. (res/muffler delete)

Hey guys,

I have a 2006 e90 330xi 93k miles. Looking to make it a little louder with an exhaust modification as buying an aftermarket exhaust is simply too expensive for me.

Anyway, I was thinking a Resonator delete would be idea as I want something not too loud. However, I am thinking about a muffler delete too or even just the muffler delete and not the res delete..

Looking for a nice sound but not too loud. Stock is too quiet/boring for me.

Anybody have experience with this or could give me some advice? Perhaps the advantages/disadvantages to each. Res delete? Muffler delete? both?

Res delete will result in rasp
Muffler delete will result in drone (and doesn't sound very refined IMO)
Secondary cat delete will free up some horses, and give a slightly deeper tone but not very noticeable on its own.

Secondary cat delete plus magnaflow or PE mod is a good option IMO

If you don't want something loud I wouldn't recommend just cutting the muffler off. The drone is horrible. I had done it before I got my new exhaust. I liked it but like I said, the drone. I currently have an active autowork catback on my 330 and I love it.

I got mine on here for around 300

Probably cheaper just to add a aa mufler or magnaflow muffler. Better yet you could use your stock muffler and go to a shop that can do the pe mod on your stock muffler

Last time i asled pe mod was around 350$.

I ve heard muffler delete in person and it sounds like crap.

Secondary cat delete > muffler delete

If it's not loud enough for you, then get a new muffler
Secondary cat delete is never loud enough. Look I'll admit there are mufflers that sound better than my delete. But mine is hardly bad and it pops and crackles on downshifts and I love it. And when the windows are up you can hardly hear it. A secondary cat delete only would be hardly noticeable imo. Plus it was cheap.

muffler delete is an unrefined sound. I prefer a secondary cat delete paired with a high flow muffler.
Definitely respect your opinion. I can see what you mean. In some areas of the rev range I can see what you mean but I think the low end growl sounds nice. Although I've heard very little actual exhausts in the n52 in person so who knows.

I have a muffler deleted car and love it. It is not unrefined or excessively loud to my ears. My neighbor is an old lady, and when she approached my car the other day, I expected to get an earful... and as it turns out, she complimented the "nice little growl" instead.

Honestly, if you think a muffler deleted inline six is too loud, you have never heard a proper LOUD car.

the reason why I would recommend a secondary cat delete + high flow muffler to anyone is because when deleting your secondaries, you are removing a type of backpressure that frees up power across the whole rev range. my friend did a muffler delete on his n52, while I started off with a secondary delete and deleting those little cats definitely made more of a difference then just removing the muffler. personally, I do like a loud exhaust, but I would rather take a quiet, but refined and good sounding exhaust system over something thats just raucous and loud. my friend ended up putting his muffler back on because it was SO unbelievably annoying..

If you are enjoying your muffler delete i see absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I do think it's best to have a high flow muffler, or even a resonator in place of your old muffler to help clean up the sound, make some backpressure and reduce drone.

a secondary cat on its own with the restrictive stock muffler wont do much, but it actually improves the sound quite a lot when paired with your muffler delete or even a better flowing muffler.

cheers
look who's back..

Wow, first of all, thanks for all the replies.

The main reason I was thinking about a delete was simply because I figured it would be the cheapest way to make the car a little louder- not particularly for performance reasons.

With that said, I think I am going to go for a used aftermarket exhaust for now and if that's not loud enough, I'll consider the res delete.

Anybody got an aftermarket muffler they're trying to get rid of? Heading over to the FS forum now..

Thanks again

I keep wondering how he worms his way back in here. I doubt he will ever realize nobody wants his input, on anything, ever. Especially not his shitty exhaust advice. Maybe they should insta ban everybody who lists "F10 528i" as their car on E90post...

his car honestly sounded better then your $100 honda civic muffler delete. not sure why you're ripping on his exhaust advice while telling others to do a muffler delete?

I've been active on these forums long before I got an account, so I know all about the posts he made. He would never shut up about oil and made quite a few enemies, but a fair amount of his posts and ideas were logical and made sense.

The one thing I will agree with him on was the exhaust ideas that he would constantly talk about. He was annoying, but his exhaust actually did sound good.

There must be a good enough reason for why he got banned, but I'm honestly having a lot of trouble understanding why max330i called his exhaust advice shit but is driving around with his muffler removed..? My friend had a muffler delete on his 525i and the exhaust that this guy had sounded WAY better.

I second that, I love a great sounding motor but loud and obnoxious, no so much. I think the exhaust on a stock Z4 335 SI is just about right and I call that sexy.

I've tweaked the crap out of my car and I am not temped to modify the exhaust at all. Just expressing personal preference without judging others.
