e91 wonder car?
I am continually surprised by the N52 in my 2007 e91 328xi wagon. I started a road trip yesterday from my home in the Florida Keys, to my sister's home in Chattanooga TN. I made the 900 miles on two and a quarter tanks of gas. Both full tanks easily could have been stretched to 400 miles each, but I like to have a reserve and filled up around 380 and 375 respectively. The dash said 34 mpg at an average speed of 69mph (some traffic near Gainesville and Miami brought the speed down). I'm just curious if others with n52 powered vehicles with 215,xxx miles are getting around the same at highway speeds (75-80 true). The only mods I have are a AFE "cold" air intake with the blue oiled filter, and random German catless headers. I do have the 3IM, but no tune, just a stock MSV80. The engine is well taken care of with liqui moly oil and additives. I have crappy Walmart tires, and the OEM cross bars with a OEM bike rack with no bike. In the wagon I had two seabags, a decent sized tool box, some random spare parts, extra 16in wheel with tire (xi spare ) and a floor jack.
Basically, I'm proud that my heavy xi wagon is still holding its own 10 years and 215,xxx miles after it came to be. I understand the mindset of the newest and best BMWs, trust me, every Roundel I receive in the mail makes me want to sell some body parts on the black market. However, we shouldn't overlook the utility of the N52 powered e90 series. Once you get over the fact that it isn't a race car (ahem, no offence Alice at BPC), and settle down with all the community feedback and hard work hassmaschine and Terraphantm especially, you begin to have a enjoyable, economic, and engaging car! |

I just took a trip up to Connecticut and back from DC (about 650 miles total). Two adults, two suitcases, and a spare tire in the back. Car is in top shape (as far as I can tell) and doesn't burn any oil. Averaged 26 mpg's. I wish my e91 was getting over 30....

I'm averaging 27.3 with a supercharger. Most of my driving is work and gym commute, which consists of a 16 mile highway with 20 stop lights. I run the A/C religiously, because it's 110+ in AZ. And I take it up to 3k almost every shift.
Also I have two 12s in the back with a big box probably weighing 75lbs

I have +220k miles on my E91. I commute 260+ miles one way to work on Monday and then home on Thursday.
Car just gets on the interstate and cruises right on down the road with the occasional idiocy of some trucker interfering in my serenity. Just put my 255/40/17 Goodyear Eagles tires back on it and I expect my mpg to drop. I was running Continental PureContacts and got ~30mpg. In process of replacing the rear bushings. Have done the lower "ball joint" and looking at doing the inside bushing now. Can see that one is failing. Trying to get my camber back down to something that does not eat insides of tires. Have replaced the rear shocks with Bilstein B6 and going to replace the front struts within a couple weeks. But I may wait a bit since I need to do the oil pan gasket and I might as well just disassemble the front end once. My only complaint is my iDrive navigation DVD is now starting to fail. Trying to decide whether to just replace the drive ( ~ $140 ) or do the CiC retrofit ( ~$600 )... I'd prefer the retrofit but there is massive confusing articles on what to do exactly. |

34 mpg seems a bit optimistic at 75-80 mph for my car. I can hold 28mpg at 80. I bet I could squeak out 30mpg @ 69mph, though.
it seems as though our range (370 miles easy) is pretty similar. I can drive door to door from SF to LA on one tank with gas to spare. Nearly a 6 hour jaunt! The city is not as nice, especially in SF with all the hills and cold starts - 14mpg! |

Nice. I don't drive long distances with my E90 anymore. The longest I've driven with it one way is 125 miles to my mom's house and the fuel economy is nice. Back when it was new and I only had one car I got up to 430 miles out of it driving all the way from my house in Norcal to my mom's house in SoCal. And the car was loaded up with my wife and daughter and all our shit. Don't recall the MPG but the estimated range on the highway as per BMW for our cars is 450 miles so I believe I could have gone past that on the reserve when the lamp came on, but by then the journey was over. I'm curious how far I can go now that I have headers.

I'm at 327,000 as of last week. Haven't updated my spreadsheet in a while, but I get an avg. of 27 MPG on my daily 175 mile commute. My commute is 35/45/20% heavy traffic/light steady cruzing/backroad hammering. I've kept the average fuel consumption records since mile 3 when I picked her up at the dealership in May 2006.

My RWD E90 used to get 32-33 easily, but my AWD E91 gets ~27-28 at the highway speeds that I regularly travel.
I did a little road trip to WNC this past weekend, and I was doing good at the beginning at ~27 mpg average, but then I found some twisty mountain roads and that just ruined the MPGs and I ended up with ~21 on the first tank |

I don't think my car has ever been shifted at under 4500 rpm, and I still don't use a drop of oil. I don't think reving these motors hurts them one bit. Frequent oil changes are your friend.

I have the stock 330 tune in mine and my fuel economy went up at least a couple mpg. It does make a difference, and the car is more powerful with the tune. I bet Bimmerggks can flash it remotely if you have their cable.

My engine uses about 1 L every 5,000 miles. I'm not sure if that's internal through the rings or through the oil separator.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

So I've been getting about 2L per 10,000 miles, and I change at every 10K. Tonight she chimed in at needing a 3rd liter at 327,500, so I'm 2,500 miles shy of hitting 10,000 miles with 2 added liters (not that I find it an issue). I'm considering a starter replacement soon as preventative (hey it is 327,000 miles after all). So that means an intake pull, which means broken oil separator parts. So I may just get the whole oil separator kit and replace with the new starter... Hopefully my oil consumption will slow up.

Mine has never asked for any with 5k oil changes (short trips, not used often). The electronic gauge never moves off full. 78k miles, fwiw. |
