Tinny noise at motorway speed Diff/gearbox/wheel bearing
My 335d has developed a tinny sound almost like a can being dragged behind the car, like lots of metal shavings bouncing around. It can only be heard when doing motorway speed and when in the outer lane and close to the central reservation or when a car passes, with the window open.
At low speed around town there's no noise. I know both front wheel bearings are shot and have them booked in early next week. In the meantime I have a few hundred miles to do, mostly motorway. I read about newer BMW's having similar sounds and it potentially being the rear diff, this is booked in for an oil change in at the same times as the bearings. It can only be heard on the drivers side near the front which makes me question the diff possibility. Could a knackered wheel bearing make a lot of noise like described? |
